an hour late:

Heres where i will begin my story.

its about 4 years ago and I am in vancouver with family on the final day of our vacation, and I wanted to leave early. my and my ex had other plans for the next day. and I my auntie pulled me aside and talked to me about staying with family is more important, and I did. I realized what she meant and understood.

fast forward to my trip to vancouver last year. little did I know that 4 hour visit friday night and breakfast monday would be the last time I ever saw her. it was a great time though. lots of laughs and everything.

It now last week, shes in the hospital with stage 5 cancer and I have a flight booked for may 8th weekend....

Saturday at 2pm I got the call, if you want to see her get on the next flight... I instantly call westjet and swap flights for an undisclosed amount of money. I get to the airpost as quick as I can, not to worried about anything the whole flight. only to get off the plane in vancouver at 10pm to find out she passed away quietly at 9pm.

I was devestated... I tried so hard to see her one last time. and I was an hour late... 1000km's of flying and 120km's of driving to be an hour late. I am trying not to beat myself up over it. life happens like this. I was able to be there with my close family though. and that was good enough. to share memories and have a few drinks and a bbq.

My goal of this thread is that you cannot put a price on seeing family, nor should you ever miss out on seeing family. they are the most important people you will ever meet. I am happy that I took her adivse and stayed late that one night. I am flying back to vancouver tomorrow for a whole 15 hours jsut to be with family for the memorial. Dont take anything or anyone for granted. you never know when you may loose them,

sorry for your loss, i'm sure she will be missed.

you did what you could, and i'm sure that where she is now she is looking down knowing you did your best.

sorry for your loss, my stepfather just lost his sister to stage 5 cancer this past december. she fought it for 2 years, nearly beat it. She hit an unfortunate case of pnemonia which prevented her from continuing her radiation treatment. that few moments allowed the cancer to return worse than ever.
