Exclamation suggestion for do it yourself oil changes.

just a tip for all you guys who do your own oil changes. keep all of your reciepts and mark what the mileage is on the reciept. so that if/when you need warranty work and they see that you haven't taken your cobalt to the dealership or certified quick lube shop for your oil changes you can still prove that they have been done and what mileage they were done at.

basically as many of you know i work at a gm dealership as a lube tech and do all my own oil changes well today my brother just got his car back from getting a fairly big warranty job completed and our shop foreman informed us that we are to be keeping a record of our oil changes for the reason's stated above. basically if the dealership wants to be a ***** that day and doesn't see a history of regular maintence then they technically can deny you warranty.

so in short just cover your butt and record everything even if you do your own tire rotates mark down the day they were done and the mileage.

ya i just don't want to see anyone get screwed out of their warranty just because they're able to do their own oil changes.

Usually if you head to a "quick lube" place they put the mileage on the receipt for you. But I always write it down anyways on the receipt too just to make sure.

you dont have to keep any records, the only way they can blame any internal motor failure due to lack of maintenance is if they took an oil sample and lab tested it and found it to be over x days/months/yrs old. Also Per GM you can follow your oil life monitor, and as we all know at 3000 miles its usually around 80%.

n8dogg i work at a gm dealership and this is what my shop foreman and service manager informed me and my brother, now keep in mind having warranty denied due to lack of maintence would be a rare chance but just think how crappy it would be if you could have prevented it just by writing down the mileage and date on your reciept is all im saying.

yes i understand, you are also a "lube tech", I was a service technician at a chevy dealership for 3 years. Maybe GM Canada is different.

for somebody to deny you warranty due to lack of maintence you would have to a)get a tech that is in a really bad mood b) really **** of the tech somehow. and i dunno if there are any difference's all i know is my bosses are very adiment on getting the correct mileage and also im just relaying what my bosses who are the ones that deal with the warranty all day long told me.

i apologize if im coming off as if i know everything there is about gm warranty.

I Keep a little book with the reciets of the oil and filter and write down the milage. Im a tech and recommend everybody does the same. Not only for warrenty reasons, but also when you go to sell the car and show the buyer a book of reciets with dates and milage and it says mobil 1 that person will be more condfident in buying the car
