Throwdown "SHOP" car Definition
Well under option #1 would that not include tuners that tune other PPL's cars for money? They develope tunes in house not available to the public and sell them to other ppl for $. Yes anyone can tune their own car, but under that mindset anyone can build their own 2.3l stroker. Not wanting to start a flamewar and I understand ZZP employees at at quite an advantage but so are engineers and any mechanics compared to the average joe.
PS I was not implying the OP or anyone on here Hates ZZP or their cars. Speaking more in a general term when I made that comment sorry if anyone was misled.

I personally think it should just be all cars in no matter what. This way everyone has something to strive for. Yes they have advatages but oh well. When you get that 11 second pass on your own think of the accomplishment. I think they deserve to be in the competition no matter what. My 2 cents. It may cost us more and we have a few disadvantages but thats life.
It's just that there will never ever be a level playing field. Some ppl on here do their own work on their cars and have sweat equity in it.. Some ppl need to take it to a shop to get the air filter changed and have no mechanical experience whatsoever. But if that same person take their car to company X and drops $15000 and kicks everyone's ass, what does it matter if it's shop or not. It's all about $.

So if Ryan at ZZP decided to sell his car tomorrow and Joe blow bought it and raced it, is it no longer a shop car cause he paid for it?
I'm not trying to be an ******* but changing the definition of something does not change the facts. I like modding my car, its a fun hobby. But I can also accept that I'll never have the fastest LSJ on the planet. Any one can pay a shop to make their car as fast as ZZP's times and that is a fact. What then put a price cap on the 1/4 times.

My opinion.
What does it matter? the *said* shop cars are out promoting the Cobalt name and what they are capable of. This bitching needs to stop, if the shop car is #1 on the 1/4 mile list then so what?
I have not seen one shop come on here and say "MY CAR IS THE FASTEST AND YOU ALL SUCK!". They come on and say "Oh hey, this is what we ran with these parts, they will be made available to the public as soon as testing is complete".
at the end of the day is it not about promoting a good name for cobalts rather than sit here and bicker back and forth about the "definition" of a shop car?
Just my 2 cents.

Ralli.
You made the original Throwndown thread so this decision is really up to you.
You started this thread knowing how the votes would go there for taking all the blame off you for removing ZZP from the top of all the 1/4 mile lists. Its pretty easy to figure out.
Personally, I voted Option 1 because I agree with the majority of people in this thread. But I would ask that you keep the records set by ZZP in the first post of your original thread and maybe start a new category labeled "Shop Cars" or something like that.
I am not hating. I am just saying.

SHOP CAR: Any car, regardless of ownership that uses any custom ,prototype or otherwise not readily commercially available parts.
Shop Part: Electric water pump kit(This is not something the average person could get made)
Not shop part: 2.3L stroker(a stroker could be made by virtually any quality machine shop or contacting a crank company, or simply swapping OE and aftermarket parts properly)
Shop Part:Proprietary OverBoost feature(I know this is now available commercially, but if it wasnt, it would be a parameter that people not related to this company couldnt change)
Not Shop Part: tune file made using commercially available software(any tune from your favorite tuner using off the shelf software)
Shop Part custom ported head(only if you cant buy the ported head or port file from the company, for example if the Maven Performance ported head was a custom design and i wouldnt sell them )
Not Shop Part custom crank/rods/pistons( you can contact a company just as easily as a shop does)
It could basically be laid out as any part that cant purchased by any member of the forum, or duplicated with reasonable cost/effort/knowledge. Examples here.....Say I had a 5axis CNC mill at home for some reason I could make my own dog engagement super strong gearset for the F35, this isnt something anyone else could reasonably be expected to duplicate and would put me in the shop category, however if a different member came up with a cool enhancement for the intercooler system, and it just required a plastic jug, some hose and basic hand tools to duplicate it wouldnt be a shop car even though he was the only person to do so.
As of now there is no denying the "shop" cars are the fastest, and this is reasonable to understand, that actually have something at stake when it comes to building a fast car(business) very few other people have as much, if anything riding on their performance stats.
There should be a distinction, but the quickest is still the quickest. Theres nothing wrong with having the honor of having the quickest Cobalt even it comes with the "stigma" of SHOP CAR after it. You think the ProStock guys are pissed when a Top Fuel guy is quicker? They are in a different league, just accept it.

Let's make it simple.
Vendor or employees of a vendor are not eligible for the throwdown of personal vehicles. A shop car is not the problem here. It's being a vendor car. If I take my car to Precision Auto here in Dayton, and get hooked up on a full build, it's not a shop car. PA is not a vendor for the cobalt community. Custom parts should be allowed, but NOT by those employed or owning a business with some specialization in LSJ/Ions

ralli: if it comes down to where you eliminate "shop cars" from the top ten, then i say you keep the shop car times on the front page just not on the top 10. make a sub-section to it and categorize them there.

Again I think the issue is the "you cant have them" parts. Not who is actually building or owns the car.
See this is where i completely disagree with you, its not the fact that a Cobalt/LSJ/LNF specialty vendor is owning or building the car, its the unobtanium parts..... It doesnt matter if the parts are Maven Performance, ZZP, OTTP, or Precision Auto of Dayton, if your car has a part that isnt commercially avaialable or readily duplicated it should get the "shop" or some other high end designation.

Shop/big dollar cars shouldnt be eliminated from the top ten, they should just be labeled as what they are.
I think the label should be UFO Unobtainable Fast Options or UM Unobtanium Mods

Why is everyone so worried about whether or not a car on the list is a shop car? Is there some kind of award that I'm not aware of? Does the winner get $5K or something? Are you people really that superficial that you want to be recognized as the best, even if it takes away from the vendors providing us with parts? If it's such a big deal to everyone, why can't we just put an asterisk or something on the "shop" cars, denoting them as such like Maven said? Personally I would rather see the best of the best and the limits of what our cars can do, not just what the average joe can do. But obviously I'm in the minority.
True, but to my knowledge this site only keeps track of drag times, and is the whole reason for this thread.
