3 yr old clutch, sometimes slip..?

I bought the car from my girlfriend, and she had the clutch replaced a little over 3 years ago, but didn't replace/resurface the flywheel. I was on a 2 hour drive last night and noticed that if I WOT it while in 4/5 gear at 70 MPH that the RPM's go up, but the speed remains the same or steadily climbs. It doesn't do it all the time, and doesn't do it in 1/2/3 gears. A buddy of mine says it could be something else like an inspection plate is moist..? (no idea how that could be it) I was going to do a google search but couldn't think of the way to type it in without getting unrelated pages.. Any ideas?

yes it is clutch slippage. 4th and 5th gear are usually the ones to show sign of this. DO NOT floor it in 4th and 5th gear when you are cruising that low of speeds. You are putting an extreme amount of pressure on your clutch. for example, if i race someone and shift at the end of each gear properly, my clutch doesnt slip; now, if i shift early, i have a slim chance of getting the gear to catch.

no worries. clutches are crazy things, one day you can pound it back and forth to 160, th enext morning you press the clutch pedal and all hell breaks loose. But like i said, just dont go gassing it in 4th and 5th at highway speeds, it will wear it out even faster. Good luck!

I read all of those posts too and tried them. I would say you are due for a clutch. Mine showed up after upgrading my LSJ to a smaller pulley, bigegr injectors and a tune. I drove it for 6 months that way and as long as I wasn't stupid with it no issues. Howver my drive home was flat for the most part. If you feel slip BACK OFF the throttle and choose differnt gear. 4th and 5th as stated were bad when I tried to pass, I had to downshift to 3rd (passing is more fun that way).

When I had the clutch pulled it was obvious that the previous woner was a clutch dragger. make sure you get that flywheel resurfaced if possible.

I plan on doing Autocross with SCCA as well and some track time in state here, so if I replace then should I go to a stage 1 or 2?? I plan on a LSJ take-off (money/time permitting) so based on the expertise here at CSS, what shall I do?

Trent based on what I have read only, the guys who are making big power like some fo the more 'extravagant' clutches. For a clutch that can take some abuse and more power without the huge price tag most folks seem to like the GMPP clutch.

I don't race my car so I went with a LUK clutch which I purchased from a member. The shop was going to use the same clutch and I got it about half the price.

Hope this helps a bit.
