How do you know if the axles are bad?

I am getting a clunking sound, and I don't know if it is the axles. How can you tell if the axles are bad the boots look good no leaking

Well, the car will not move so well to say the least. The internal part could be shot and just awaiting to tear apart. I'd get it checked out before you get stranded.

I had a clunking sound in my front end i also thought it was my axles but when i took it to the dealer they said it was the steering intermediate shaft. they replaced it and the car feels smoother and i dont feel the clunking. this is the second time i had it replaced

Does anyone see grease coming out of the inner axle boot, spraying around the tranny and control arms? I have that happening, pretty evenly, on both sides. I cleaned it up two weeks ago when doing CABs, and today when installing the tranny mounts I saw that it was back. Was never there a few months ago when I did my exhaust mani, so it must be recent. Car has about 27.5k miles on it.

Bump for anyone else with input on this topic. I don't want to start a new thread just for this.

and yes it usually doesn't happen to both of them at the same time but it is possible. I have seen it a few times when I was working in the shop. Take back to the dealer. They will try to just replace the boots but more than likely you will end up with two new axles.

Ok, I used to work at the chevy dealer, so they'll do axles for me. I just was wondering if anyone had seen this before. I thought it was weird that both would fail, also because there are no cracks in them, its coming out of the inside end. Strange to me.

Mine aren't even torn, just leaking grease out the inside where the axle is smaller. One tech said its just probably from heat, but I don't buy that.
