Yup lol its holding so far. I'm tuned super conservative so it not a problem. Just wanted something I didn't have to worry about. Not really a race car at this point could be yeah also it installed it at around 103800 miles
Just want to update this thread with some recent info that has been brought to light.
Apparently, there have been a few people who have gotten the LuK flywheel with the GMPP clutch, who have run into issues with shifting at higher rpm due to failure of the clutch to fully release. I personally have not run into the issue, but it is something to be aware of.
There are 2 versions of the flywheel, one made in Germany, the other China. Unfortunatley, we haven't pinpointed if one/both suffer the issue, and if it's a more recent issue or something that has been occuring for some time.
That being said, I've managed ~1000 miles since the update in July, and everything is still rock solid for me. My flywheel was stamped with the Germany tag, but it has been 4 years since I bought mine, and who knows how long it was in stock for before I bought it.
Managed to put on another couple thousand miles due to an issue with my company vehicle, car is currently just shy of 118k now, so that's about 8k miles this year, bringing me just shy of 40k on the combo now.
I've yet to run into any issues with mine, however, as stated in an earlier post/another thread, there have been recent issues with the LUK flywheels. Something to be aware of for anyone looking into future purchases.
Okay, after basically neglecting this for a year, here is a short update.
After taking it out this spring and hitting the 4x4, the turbo blowing back in May, and a bunch of personal issues, I'm finally going to be in a position to get this thing back on the road this month.
Got new wheel bearings that smoked from the impact, and new tie rods just to have it realigned(no bent suspension surprisingly). Currently talking with ZZP about possibly rebuilding my blown Z54 with a Z57 CHRA while keeping the 6758 wheels, or just swapping up to a Z57(would prefer to have a BB CHRA this time around).
Once this is all done, I sadly need to start using it as a daily driver again for the first time in 5 years. Good news is I'll ACTUALLY have more inclination to keep this thread going again. Updates will follow in the next month or so as I get this all settled.
Good to hear. I was thinking about selling mine, but I'm actually getting excited about it again now that I've figured out a couple issues and have an LK9 manifold about to go on it.
Still need to figure out how to get my gear shifts to be cleaner. I'm guessing the F23 cable mount bracket needs some more solid mounts.
Got new wheel hub bearings and inner/outer tie rods in, tape measure alignment until I go get one at a buddies shop. Currently having a set of all seasons tossed on my rims just to make it mobile.
After talking with ZZP, we worked out an extremely fair deal on just swapping up to a Z57. Going to be a bit before I get my turbo back, but it should be a blast. Only downside is going to be retuning it too, but such is life.
And so it begins, the death of this clutch, 3rd gear, or the valvetrain. Maybe all the above
I am curious though, as it'll really be a great test of a clutch/flywheel combo that cost less than some of the performance clutches available for the car.
Stopped into PWerks finally to have Dave adjust everything to the new Z57, and I gotta say I am impressed with it. We left the tune at 25psi like the Z54, but unfortunately the dyno was already shut down for the season, so no solid numbers. He said he'd toss it back on in the spring to see where it's at, but it pulls even harder now so idk if I need to
Good news is the combo doesn't slip yet punching it, so time will tell. It does spool quickly, almost feels like stock, but then again after being on a journal bearing for almost 4yrs it could just be from that.
First update of the year. After last year/this years issues, and not driving it as much, the car currently has 126k now, so another 8k from my update back in 2020.
The combo is still holding on against the new Z57, so we'll see how long it last now. We're up to almost 50k on the combo, of which about half has been Z54 and about 3k or so for the Z57.
Okay, so minus a few more things I need to deal with, the car is now garaged for the winter. Currently just over 133k after a some back and forth between IL and MI for moving, and just going to customers on nice days. It still holds no problem with about 60k on it, with no obvious noises/slippage while driving.
I don't have the most powerful car here, but it has been subjected to 350wtq since day one. And while I never got a chance to officially dyno the Z54's/Z57, based on my personal experience with PWerks the E-tune on the BB Z57 has to be at or just north of 400.
So far, I'd say best clutch setup for 90% of people who own one of these cars since most aren't rocking 500+ hp. While there is definitely more options available with better clamping capacity, you can't beat the value here. The only thing that needs some more research is the differences between the German version and Chinese version of the LuK flywheel, and why that caused some users issues noted earlier in the thread. Price difference was negligible between versions, with no way of knowing what version you'd get, and the flywheel is/was $550 less than the OE from GM at my time of purchase.
I will keep this thread going as long as I own the car, which I don't have any current plans of selling. The body/paint needs some love, but I've been tossing the idea around of gutting everything and making a Goblin since before the second Z54 was swapped with the Z57.
My gmpp and Luk flywheel are doing great on aftermarket tune and all Boltons with stock turbo for 18k miles. Bought the care at 87k and currently have 148k.
Final update to this for 2024, car is getting parked for winter and some maintenance. Currently sitting at 153,993 miles, so roughly 3,000mi since my update in May.
Still holds without slipping, so even with some mileage it's at least proving it can stand up to FBO-K04/Z54/Z57 abuse for a bit if on a major budget. All in all another year making me happy I decided to test a budget setup and it proving it's worth to me.
Coming up on ~80k total on the setup, with ~50k being big turbo, and more than half at this point under a ball bearing Z57.
I started driving the car randomly back in March, and since then I am just shy of 157k currently on the car after a trip to Minnesota. Still going strong, and basically already proved it's worth for the cost.
I know much hasn't changed, but I did say I'd keep the occasional updates going until it blew up.
Nearing the end of the year before it gets parked, may have some maintenance to do.
Car currently has 162,003mi on it, and the clutch still holds strong. I might pull the trans this winter, sounds like my tob is starting to go. It rattles slightly ~1600-2200rpm and goes away when clutch is engaged, but it's been ~9yr/85k since I did the clutch so wouldn't surprise me.
