Question Need clutch or trany already!?

I just bought a blue 2007 Cobalt SS Supercharged with only 34000 Km on it (21000Miles) Yesterday driving back home after i shifted my car revs up high then drops before it accelerates. I think it is my clutch but dont know how it can be toast already. I never do burnouts or clutch drops. If you have any information that can help me it would be very helpful. Where to get replacement parts, What to check, how to test it, what to buy, how expensive it may be...anything. Thanks

Stock tranny's for the LSJ can range from 500-1300 depending on quality or if you want LSD. if thats not the problem, then you can buy an upgraded clutch for around 450ish depending on how much grab you want.

Sounds like clutch slip . do you know anything about previous owner?
Could be a bad clutch ,could be a cracked trans leaking oil onto the clutch disk
Check for trans oil leaking where the trans mates to the engine under the car.

Could also be an issue with the slave or master cylinder issue but not likely.

Sounds like the previous owner has beaten on it and your clutch is near death......not uncommon with "sporty" cars, especially lease returns.

Easy test - get up to cruising speed (80 - 100 kph or so) in 5th and stand on it - if the revs shoot up, your clutch is the issue.

Sounds like your clutch is going. Maybe a good thing to look into a KY Stage 2 clutch for your setup. We have them on www.TurboTechRacing.com

Thanks for all the replies guys. I called my mechanic and a transmission shop today. My mechanic told me to do the 5th gear trick aswell. the revs do shoot up so he thinks its my clutch. It slips really bad under heavy loads and on hills. I was quoted 1400$ to fix the clutch. I am the second owner of the car and the previous owner did take fantastic care of the car but i do believe it was HIS first standard vehicle. I am not a racecar driver but i dont ride my clutch. Going to the transmission shop tomorrow for a full look over. Will post the results

Cost cen be expensive if you plan to have someone else do the work best to just call around.
As for the clutch itself , if you don't plan on heavy mods, the GM LSJ clutch upgrade is by far the best bang for buck clutch IMO. Ecotec LSJ Clutch Upgrade Kit 19212712

however if you plan to mod and race, the clutch TTR offers looks pretty nice, wish i would have known about it last time i had the trans out.

Sad but $1400 is not out of line - at least not around here.

Shop rates are well over $100.00/hr here, even Crappy Tire is over a c-note now (and I would not take a car I hated there ), parts won't be too bad.

Like phatnackySS says though, make a few calls, you can likely get a better deal than a dealership, and it would be a good time to upgrade if you plan on doing so anyway.

Sorry for the late reply. So i have taken it to a few shops just for a quick check and test drive and the conclusion is that my clutch is toast. Average price to get replaced is 1200 with a "family" discount and the stock clutch and flywheel to 1600 with a stage 1 clutch and lightweight flywheel. I live in Calgary Alberta and dont have time to wait for the parts to get shipped here so i will either bite the bullet and pay go back to a stock clutch :/ or try and find a shop here that sells upgrade kits for reasonable price with possible warranty. If anyone knows of a shop in Alberta that meets those requirements PLEASE post.

Thanks guys

Might be cheaper to overnight the parts than pay what the shop wants. when i cracked my trans , i had to have the car back up and running by Monday , it was a wed when it happened ordered parts thur morning had them late Friday. Tom at CED really helped me out.

but im willing to bet most of that cost is labor. a shop should be able to do it in 4-5 hrs ,but they will charge you the book standerd which i believe is 8hrs. So if you factor in clutch and light weight flywheel they are asking about 106 bucks an hr @ 8hrs which is fairly typical rate. you could call around some other shops , they may offer lower rates or charge less time. I can do a clutch and flywheel in my driveway on jackstands with hand tools in 8hrs ...so im sure a shop can do it in less.

edit: i see your in Americas hat, so next day may not be an option.

Yeah shipping to Canada before the long weekend wont be overnight lmao. I contacted my local napa and they will get me a light weight fly wheel and a stage 2 clutch for 670 dollars and they can get it shipped to me in 4 days which is pretty reasonable. The price is the best i can find in Canada without waiting a couple weeks for parts to get here. I think my final answer is to buy the parts from napa for 700. And my father knows the owner of a transmission shop that will do the job for about 600 dollars which is pretty reasonable i think. Overall it will cost me 1100-1300.

Thanks for the advice and input. Will post the final price and completion when its done. Probalby in a week or two i will have it in a shop.
