i think i see what you're saying: basically, swap an lnf with a rwd tranny from a solstice or sky??? It makes sense, however, those cars were built with the intention of being rwd. Their engine sits in such a way as to allow the tranny to connect to rear wheels. Cobalts were never meant to be rwd, and as such the way the engine sits would make it incredibly difficult to transfer the power to the rear wheels.

I have been thinking about that myself but not gonna spend the money to try.

This is true. I wonder how much reinforcement it would need. Hmmm....

I mean basically taking everything from the front of the car, motor, trans, axles, etc. And just picking it up and dropping it in the trunk set up the same way as it is in the front of the car now.

Like Ex said, you'd need to reinforce the rear, but I feel like it wouldn't be *that* hard to do. And probably easier/cheaper than keeping the motor in the front of the car.

^^^yeah, but at this point I wouldn't even say that's a cobalt....i mean, it's just a stripped body. I get it though, it's been done, but I'd like to see a dd rwd cobalt.

why not take the drivetrain out of a solstice/sky, mount the engine in the trunk of the cobalt and the axle under the hood. talk about a mind ****.

idk, b/c now the front end is extremely light and wouldn't make for a very well balanced ride. You'd sure as a bigger trunk though, that's for sure

red was building an all out race car though. he knew he'd be spending money to do it properly. a "cheap" supercomp cobalt turnkey is about $125k. ~$75k-$95k rolling chassis. and then he just kept getting screwed over but decided to stick with it

VicRed could've bought a supercar for how much he's put into his. It's gonna be awesome when it's done. But there's no way I'd have the patience for it.

Have had the same thought - doable perhaps but you would be talking a complete reengineering of the rear structure of the car. Strut towers, cradle mounts, reenforcment to replace all the metal you would have to cut. Not something you're going to do in the average garage over a few weekends, and not cheap.....

You would be relocating the battery and fuel tank (custom built fuel cell more like) as well as the spare to the front. Also, you will note that the engine sits ahead of the drive axles, swapping everything to the rear puts the "heavy" motor inside the wheelbase instead of outside. Might have to run some numbers tonight, I think the balance would be pretty close on 50/50

Not sure about the "bigger" trunk, ours is pretty fair sized for a small car - assuming you can squeeze it through that ridiculous little opening

Of course, you would have to run lines for the cooling system, hvac, extend wiring harnesses, shift cables, clutch hose, etc. to the front - nothing overwhelming but a lot of custom fab work.

Once you got everything in place and mounted, you are looking at custom springs because the front is going to be lighter than it was - think your stocker has a big wheel gap now? Take 300 lbs (or more) off the front and look at it
Change the spring rates and you need to look at revalving the struts - $$$$$$$$

Save the time, money, and busted knuckles - get yourself an MR2

ill get some photos of what i have done now which isn't a lot i have spent a lot of time tracking down parts and am still waiting on some to arrive. i have the rear end pulled and mocked up where the new rear end will be. the new rear end is a 1/2 inch wider but will still fit in the wheel wells and use the same rim size. i'm in the process of pulling the motor so i can attach the tranny and find out my clearances, lengths and locations of everything under the car. the drive shaft is not together but have the parts for fab. i will be working on this for a while guys and i know there will be a lot of custom fab but i have the will and have not jumped in to this with out doing by research and almost a year and a half into the design. once major work has started th epics will keep coming
