The Magnuson/Moss Act of 1974 prohibits a dealer from denying warranty coverage because they THINK you abused the car. They must be able to PROVE that you abused the car or that you do not know how to drive a manual and therefore smoked the clutch. The burden of proof is not on you. That being said, I assure you that it is not the right thing to do to go into the dealer and start threatening them with legal action if they do not honor the warranty. I would recommend one of two approaches. 1. Ask to speak with the service manager. Explain your situation as factually and un-emotionally as possible. Start by giving the background. Let them know your level of experience driving a manual. Tell them that the SS/SC has had a history with clutch capacity issues based on your experience with the forums. Tell them that you do occasionally drive the car in a spirited manner, but certainly not beyond the way that would be expected for this type of car. Ask that they replace the clutch and that it be covered under the warranty. If this approach does not work, then you probably are not going to be successful with this dealership. 2. Locate a dealership in the metro Columbus area that does understand the issues and is willing to work with you.

Good luck.

if they truely are not aware of this issue, they must not sell many SS/SC's. You might ask if you can meet with their "Brand Quality Manager" if you think they are not aware of the issue. This is a GM employee that represents many different dealerships and should be aware of the issue.

My SS goes to the dealer tomarrow. He wants to make sure it's the clutch before he replaces it for me. Oh, and he's doing it under warrenty. 5100 miles on mine... So he said since the miles are that low that there is now way that the clutch should be gone by now so he said he would get it covered.

Get used to it, GM really dropped the ball on the clutch they sellected! 12,000 miles on mine, I'm noticing the slip and the smell! When it goes, I'm going to purchase a much better clutch and see about GM covering the installation. It's not our fault that GM is run by MORONS! BTW, I quated the wrong guy!

slip

Dont know if anyone else has tried this method or not.... When i first got my SS/SC i waited till i had around 1200 miles on it before really getting on it. The 1st person i raced was a friend of mine (also ss/sc) we were at a stop light and when it turned green i nailed it.... It spun terribly in 1st which is to be expected because the traction on the cobalts is terrible but when i switched to 2nd it seemed to keep spinning... by this time the race had allready been lost so out of anger i slammed 3rd and it kept revving i realized that my tires werent spinning we stopped at the local hang out to check it out and the smell of clutch was horrible i sat there for about 25 minutes and when i took off the clutch felt somewhat different i have since then not had any slip at all. I know for a fact that it was not poor driving skills because i've never owned an automatic I used to work at the Dealership and they told me that they had heard several complaints of it in the first few thousand miles but it usually goes away. So in short roast the clutch good one time and see if that does anything if not hope you have friends at the dealership haha.

DONT do this^. I "rosted" mine one time almost the exact same way he did but I was trying to ceach up to my dad after missing my turn and it has slipped like hell ever sins. I had no problems till it slipped the first time. I though I was spinning my tires in 2nd. Was a bit pissind that I missed my turn and it was wet out so I grabed 3rd and got back on it. I let off it a second later when I relized I was not spining the tires but frying the clutch and it has not felt the same sines and it slips almost every time I get on it now.

F***ing POS stock clutch! This thing is going to the dealer in about a week.

Check out my posts on my clutch problems.

My car had slave cylinder problems, the clutch itself can hold Stage 2 power.

I would say that the stock clutch on the SS/SC is adequate, but marginal. I pulled mine at 21k miles to put in a stage 3 and the original looked fine. What the stock clutch cannot handle is being smoked on multiple occasions. This clutch actually went through all of the same validation as the Z06 clutch did for durability, which is more stringent than the standard clutch durability. Mind you that it did this testing behind an LSJ. Nevertheless, I think that the powers to be at GM do realize that there is an issue here, they are just confused as to why? Signed, one of those moron GM engineers.

I think the problem is actulay not just one part but 2 or three. Im thinking that the clutch master cylinder is posably not releasing the slave cylinder all the way od the the slave cylinder is doing this all by its self. And the other problem may be a presure plate that is just a bit to weak for the job its being asked to do.
This is all speculation and I will have more info after my clutch is removed and I can inspect it.

One thing I do think GM needs to work on with the clutch is the feal and the engageament.
It has a weak pedal with to much travel and it has a tendancy to want to grab hard when you dont want it to (I.E daily driving) and to not grab hard when you do want it to (I.E some speareted driveing).

My only other complaint about it is that the F***ing thing slips! Well atleast mine dose.

With the goods in my sig using a 2.7 pulley at the track and BFG drag radials dumping the clutch at 3K RPMS my clutch has never slipped once and still feels strong. This is after a total of about 60 1/4 mile passes over 2 seasons so take it for what it's worth.

I think you got a good one man^^^

I have been driveing a manual for more then 10 years now and I drive a semi for a living.

I have never had a clutch slip on my including the one in my cavalier that I beat the crap out of for over 100K. That clutch worked just fine and never gave me any problems. And the car was making close to 160Hp (Stock was 120hp).

I have like 5300 miles on mine right now and my clutch slips on the 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift.

It will go to the dealer as soon as I can get home.
