Terry11's 4t45/4t65 Auto Swap

I've been contemplating on making a build thread about this little endeavor.

So here goes.

Long story short i've been turbo for about 4 years and i've been through 4 f35's. 2 Were blown apart and 2 were from dealer error. Twice the dealer work destroyed my clutchmasters stage 4 as well.

So i've been searching for trans reliability for quite some time now and I decided to buy Paul's auto swap from mezz's lnf. I will not be tuning through my ecu like he did I'm going with a stand alone transmission control unit. Thanks for the tip matt@zzp.

The unit I have is a one off transmission. 4t45 bell housing and 4t65 outputs. Not sure of how much power it will hold, but it was previously ran at 15psi on a gt3076r with no issues. The converter was made by level ten motorsports in New York 3200 rpm stall.

If this trans doesn't hold the power I want a fully built 4t65 will be the next step. I do not dd this car anymore so a relatively high stall auto won't bother me on the street.

I had to do a few things differently to make this work. Relocating my oil cooler is one of them as you can see in this picture. I also had to change to lnf hub assembly's and spindles to compliment the axles. The motor now sits at a slightly different angle and it's more forward. My rad hoses are a little crinkled up.

A few things about my 05 SS:
The car will be on a pte5557 for now, I have other plans in the future.
ZZP manifold and dp. My charge pipes, tial gate and bov.
A HEAVILY modified intake manifold I bought from blazin back in the dayyyy.
Just recently shortened it to take the cold side straight down instead of the wheel well.
I also modified the end so it no longer touches the rad hose.
Welded vacuum plates on the front as well as tapping the runners for a 4 port meth injection system. I know most will say the 4 port meth injection is unnecessary but if you can't tell already I like being different.
I'm also running a home made catch can system. Blow by should not be an issue whatsoever when I am finished.
Head is built with Ferra valve train/springs, HKS regrinds, ARP studs, ported head and port matched manifold. Stock block

This build has a really good start, but I have a long road ahead of me. I still need to order the trans controller/harness and finish the shifter and paddle setup.
One other thing I will be doing before it is finished is wiring a 3'' cutout to a pedal switch. Every time I go wot the exhaust dumps. This way I can have a really quiet ride at all times and no restriction when needed. Exhaust will need finished all my gauges and fiberglass work needs done as well. Meth kit needs put together. New charge pipes need fab'd and a little more paint work yet. So here she is so far!

You can see my catch can setup in the last picture. 1/2 npt barb fitting from the billet oil cap and the stock line from the back of the valve cover as well running to the can then recirc'd back into the intake which will be right beside it.

Thanks again to my brother aka my aluminum welder. You can see him in the middle of my pictures trying to pull my pedals out haha

The auto should hold quite a bit more as its rated to hold more per gm's specs. But who knows lol! The only trans that held up for me was a ss/na trans (f23) don't ask how or why but it held great!

Thanks man. I'm thinking compounds! lol jk

Yeah Paul claims GM "built" this unit as well. Don't ask me how he knows, but apparently when they tested it on the lnf they realized they were going to need to beef it up a good bit in order for it to be reliable. Then it wasn't cost effective after they got all done so they never released an auto option. And the trans they tested and built is the one I have.

My wastegate springs are 19-20 psi.

I'm gonna have to pull one out and start from there beause i'm still not convinced it's gonna hold. The convertor will take whatever I throw at it I do know that much.

But that's cool man how long have you been turbo

that is one sweet project there.

tell me more about the transmission though. you say its a 4t45 bellhousing with 65 outputs. but it looks to be a complete 45 unit.

Thanks bud

Paul told me the axles came from an impala or something. I guess they're not standard 4t45 axles. I had to switch to lnf hubs and spindles in order for it to work. It's rumored that GM did work to it as well, but I have no way of knowing unless I would have someone who is knowledgeable with 45's pull it apart. I'm sure it'll be back out sooner or later.

The part number on the transmission doesn't exist in GM's computers.

Powertrain Solutions controller is being made and I might have it the end of the week.

Got a few more things done i'll post some pics later

Need to finish up the crank case ventilation system, run the shifter linkage, install pedals, wire some gauges, make cold side intercooler pipe, and install the stand alone controller.

The meth will come a little later, and the exhaust will need done as well after I get the car running.

I'm hoping to have her on the road again in a month. Fingers crossed

I know right??? I actually don't know if that little oil cooler will cut the mustard i'll be monitoring the oil temp very closely if it doesn't it's getting one just like the trans has with a fan. All the fans will be controlled by the PCS module. Which I received on Monday

And the welding will come as well I can't tig and don't have one to practice on. A buddy of mine does and will be dropping it off here soon. The hot side will end up being 2 piece when I'm done

Build looks promising. I hope it all works out for you. If it does you will be very happy, there's nothing like a turbo car with a big stalled auto behind it.
