tranny bolt WTF!

I for the life of me can not get the tranny fill bolt out!!
wtf is the trick to it......it's not like u have room to get a mallet in there..or even a breaker bar...
anyone have any ideas?

I got RP max gear 75w90 i was gonna go with the manufacture...but none of the dealers had any of the stuff on hand...
will this be ok?
2006 ss/sc g85

Is the gm tranny fluid for the 06 ss/sc g85 suppost to be red?
I opened it up and got tons of fluid out...i am guessing it is because I have the front jacked up....
so when filling it back up..how should I do it? because if I did it with the front jacked up would that not cause me to not put enough in?

No gear oil. You need the stuff from the dealer. Its like 20 a quart and you need 2. Gear oil just a little to thick. Good luck though.

Wrong. GM transmission oil for the Cobalt SS is gear oil, Castrol 75w90 with some additives to be specific. It should be $11/quart. They should have been able to get you some within 2-3 days, and I doubt you couldn't wait that long.

I would recommend against RP anyhow. Overpriced gear oil that performs the same as everything else.

Wrong, please check your facts. It is equivalent to a 10-30W motor oil. A 75W-90 gear oil is closer to 15-40W motor oil weight - too thick for our transmissions.

Wrong.

If you had done any research you would have noticed that the same information has been reported by different people over the past several years. (post was in 2006)

This oil weight has also been confirmed by the resident transmission expert (Qwikredline). Feel free to ask him if you still disagree - I have no idea where you got that info from.

the correct answer that Dainslaif has correctly identified is the official GM technical specification. When we were doing the initial Ion Cobalt race cars in 04/05 under contract to GM , the engineers at GM were very (read strongly) specific about using the factory specified oil, and as we were rebuilding the transmissions back then from parts scavenged off other vehicles, we did do what was asked of us. I do have a trick 75w90 GL6 spec oil with lots of extra EP additive we use in Corvette race cars heavy trucks etc, but we DO NOT use it in Cobalts we trot down to the dealer and buy it from them by part number they have lots most places....and it works we tear down transmissions and we fix them etc and have for 4 years now and the oil is good. So it aint broke we aint changing to any other oil... end of rant.
Fluid type: Castrol BOT 0063
Transmission weight: 45 kg ( 99 lb )
Fluid capacity (approximate): 1.7L / 2.0 qt ( dry )
Power take off: no
Applications: Chevrolet Cobalt SS
Saturn Ion Red Line
Gear oil part number 21088899

The weight for the 0063 oil is not published. It's weight is not printed in the manual and there are no materials data sheets readily accessible. I actually did spend some time researching - but not on CSS.net.

Ask a few SAAB techs and see what they put in in F35s. SAAB MTF0063, Redline MTL 70W-80, 10W-30 motor oil and even ATF is used in colder climates. 75W-90 gear oil? Never.

But don't take my word for it, pour the stock fluid and 75W-90 oil side by side and see for yourself that they are not the same.

You do need to take the wheel off. First get some good quality penetrating fluid and soak the fill and the drain plugs. What is happening is the aluminum plug has fused to the housing of the tranny. You will need a 8mm allen wrench. Typically the ones that you buy are too long so you need grind it down to fit between the cross member and into the plug. You will need some leverage to break the seal. Once its done take the allen key out since you should be able to remove it by hand.

As for the fill plug. Also as mentioned above with the wheel off the car place a 8mm allen key socket on a very long extension. Once the seal is cracked you are home free.

Here is a tip for filling. get a hose that will fit into the hole of the tranny. Also get a cap off of a bottle of Lucas oil additive or Gear oil and put it onto your bottle of tranny fluid and squeeze the new fluid in.

Note TAKE YOUR TIME! A new drain plug was $30 cnd.. i learned this the hard way.

I hope this helps!

The short side of the allen wrench is too long and doesn't fit.

i actually just the allen wrench and just used a socket extender bar as a breaker bar had just enough room, and got it off that way...if you get all the way into the hole you more then likely won't strip it....it's a very deep hole..anyway i got mine off like that, just took a bunch of pressure/trying/time.
