THIS IS AN EMAIL I GOT FROM ROYAL PURPLE FOR AN 06 SS/SC:

"We've analyzed this product and recommend using the RP 10W40 Motor Oil or XPR 10W40 Motor Oil as a replacement for this transmission.
An alternative – if this is a Cobalt SS - although it is a heavier viscosity product MaxGear 75W90."

Redline say:

Our most popular gear oil, this is the preferred product in nearly all car and light truck differentials, both conventional and limited-slip. 75W90 is preferred for most racing applications. It contains friction modifier which is recommended for limited-slip units

Compatible with petroluem or synthetic gear oils, this product will significantly reduce the friction break-in of differentials, reducing break-in temps for as much as 50 degrees F. Limited slip or positraction units will often chatter without use of this product or a gear oil with a similar modifier, so add only enough to eliminate the chatter and avoid making the plates or clutches too slippery.

Quaife lsd uses gears not clutches....so stick with the sikolene/castrol BOT OEM fluid my advice...

Redline offers a non-friction modified 75w90, thats the product I recommend. Redline 75w90NS (or like Qwik recomends and I also pointed out, stock is a fine choice too)

1 i just got my 08 ss/tc and i want know how i can tell what transmission is in there because i herd you guys talknig about to diffrent kinds. i know my car has the lsd diff in it so i dont know if that narrows it down.
2. in the mornings usiually when its cold i knoticed that revers dosent engage smoothly, it dosent grind but its not smooth. i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

If you can please let me know the answers thank you !

You have the code MU3, F35 transmission.

Reverse is hard to engage because its cold most likely. Normal condition if it works fine once warmed up

Thanks Maven you hit the nail on the head. I had figured the same because i noticed it only when it was cold that reverse had given me the problem. I also knoticed that 5th gear does the same, not all the time but i cant say that it only happens when its cold. Im sure its probally nothing but i just want to double check, if it an issue with the tranny fluid ill bring it to get replaced but if not i will have to pay close attention to it.
I wanted to know how you can tell that me car has the f35 tranny in it is it with the lsd diff thats the one they use or could you also tell by the VIN #?

Open your trunk, look under the carpet for the silver and black SPID tag. it will list all your RPOs(regular production options). Youre looking for G85.

Red line MTL Use that. GL3, 4, or 5 dosnt do well in our trans. Shifts are not smooth, popping out of gear, and whining.
Had GL type fluid in my as per Maven, then installed the Red Line and all the above problems went bye bye.

Redline MTL is a 70/80 GL4, which is vert similar to the new fluid. 75w90 is closer to the original fluid, but isnt ideal for cold climates. GM stuff really is the best, just change it often. I only recommend Redline because its often easier ro find and some people just dont want GM. GM 21018899 is SS/SC fluid

Yes, you had a GL fluid, but didnt we discuss this earlier, and you just had a full friction modified 75w90 in there and the 75w90NS that I was actually recommending as an alternative. It was a miscommunication I believe, you asked if it used ATF or GL, I said GL and you just put in generic GL type fluid, correct?

Yes thats all it was Maven, its all good. Im hoping to moving back to FL soon, and I wont have to worry about cold weather anymore and will feel more comfortable with the Redline. As it stands it has worked very well so far. Since so many GM dealer ships are closing its hard to find the OE fluid. So I guess Ill stick with the Redline, and its a lot cheaper. Summit has it just about all the time.

Maven: Would a 75W-90 GL-4 or GL-5 safely work in the 08-09 SS/TC F35/MU3? What happens if the gear oil has friction modifiers, I see you recommended the Redline 75W-90 NS (no friction modifiers).

Yes it will work safely, it just wont be as smooth in colder weather. You must not use a friction modified GL fluid, it will shift like total crap.

The fluid in the TCs F35 is different(thinner) than the fluid in the SC F35s, if for some reason you need new fluid already and cant find the proper fluid for the TC(its hard to come by) you can safely and with little noticeable change use the same 21018899 fluid that the SC cars call for, if you hate the dealer or for some reason MUST have an aftermarket fluid, the Redline MTL is probably the best choice for the TC, but i would try and find the proper factory fill if you need it.
