Transmission Fluid...

... I know, I know, there are lots of threads and I thought this one might be useful here rather than other spots.

My intent was just to create a thread to merge some information, while confusing, to point out the differences in the appropriate fluid for the lsj trans and hopefully assist some noobs if needed...if they search.

To begin with the master:
http://www.red lineforums.com/forums/584985-post56.html

Also:
http://www.red lineforums.com/forums/performance-modifications/1983-thinking-swapping-out-my-transmission-fluid.html

Which also contains the TSB link that WOP discussed.

When I was researching about changing my own fluid I came across some inconsistencies such as:

#88862472 is the newer and slightly lighter weight trans fluid for the LNF's.

The slight differences -

From Maven the guru:
"Gear oil part number 21088899 lsj

88862472 fluid is the fluid that is spec for the new F35s as used behind the LNF. Its yet another unique Castrol GL type fluid, the original stuff is "BOT 0063", the new stuff is "BOT 0402", the major difference being its thinner than the original. The 21018899 is roughly something between a 75w85 and a 75w90, the new stuff is roughly between a 70w80 and a 75w85."

To this end I think the appropriate GM replica number I have found mirroring the saturn number of 21018899 is GM #88861800. I am under the impression that 88862472 probably supersedes the GM 88861800 number also. However, that precludes that 88861800 is = to 21018899

All of the fluids seem to be available. 2101899 is on gmpartsdirect.com in packs of 6 but they sometimes list things that are unavailable or not in stock and the local dealers here have the part number, it is a valid number, but can't order any of it, my dealers being gm folks.

88862472 is on gmpartsdirect, gmpartscenter.net and saturnparts.net

If anyone has any other information that might be useful to relate the fluids or specific properties I would appreciate knowing it. Also, I can't see why 88862472 wouldn't be an acceptable substitute for the original 2101** fluid unless someone knows otherwise?

Also, if someone wants to show me how to do the alias links to red lineforums.com (take out the space by the way) I would appreciate it.

Maven or Bill (GM Eng) posted on another forum that the LNF fluid is a good upgrade for the LSJ.

Maven also wrote that the LNF fluid is Castrol Syntrans but I have never seen it sold in the states.

I am currently running a blend of Red Line MT-90 (1 qt.) and MTL (.7 qt.) to get the approx viscosity of the 75w-85 GL-4 fluid. Performs ok but the LNF OEM fluid was still better driving. They put the LSJ fluid in when my clutch was done as the LNF fluid was out of stock within 100 miles. It was causing the gears to be 'sticky' and the syncros would not engage under high rpm shifts without doubleclutching.

The LNF fluid 88862472 is shipping to me next week. Thanks for the post.

A little bit more info from some knowledgeable people.

I cut about 3/8 " off of an 8mm allen wrench to get the lower plug out. Take the top plug out with an 8mm socket allen bit before the bottom one to allow it to vent while draining..

LSJ fluid in an LNF sux. I had that after a clutch install as no LNF fluid was available at the time. Hard to engage syncros & gears were 'sticky'. Didn't want to come out of a gear after driving in it for a while.

Red Line MT-90 /MTL blend to get the right viscosity (1 qt. MT-90 to .7 qt MTL) was better than the LSJ stuff but not as good as the LNF fluid.

Refilled with the LNF specific GM fluid last weekend and all is well again.

Use the GM LNF fluid in an LNF. #88862472
