06 base LS model head unit change-out
06 base LS model head unit change-out
I want to change out the 06 head unit on my base model. There's no OnStar, or the premium system upgrade. I need to know what else, besides the radio, that I need! Brand name and model # would be real helpful!
Thanks!
Thanks!
your best bet would be to get an aftermarket head unit. Most aftermarket units are single din size, half the size of the factory base one you have now. You can get a really nice unit for about $300, which will play MP3, WMA, CD. You will probably want to get better speakers as well. Right now you have 6.5 in the front doors 6/9's in the back. Depending on how much you want to spend you can get a really good set of 6.5's and 6/9. Then you may want add an Amp and Sub as well. Then you'll a complete system.
crutchfield.com should be able to tell you. I threw my packages out...so I don't have the part #'s handy. But the dash kit should be about 20, and the harness should be about 10-15, depending where you buy it from. Don't let someone tell you that you have to spend 120 on the dash kit to retain your DIC, it's a lie!

Goosie, if I were you, here's what I'd do. Go around to Best Buy/Circuit City/any audio store near you that carries a wide range of head units and play with them. Find one you like with the features you want. Then, come home and go online to crutchfield.com and buy it. When you buy a head unit from them they throw in everything you need to hook it up, dash kit, wiring harness, and antenna. This way you don't have to figure out part numbers and worry about buying the wrong part. They even give you a "Mastersheet" for your car, which has instructions for installing the head unit as well as replacing all of the speakers.
Crutchfield's prices are usually in line with Best Buy and other big box stores. A lot of people say Crutchfield is expensive; but even if you save $30 somewhere else online, you'll spend more than that buying the dash kit and wiring harness to hook it up.
No, I don't work for crutchfield
I just think they're especially good for people who might be unsure, since I've been to so many audio stores where the guys there tried to bullshit me and steer me into a certain product. One quote I remember a guy saying, "higher voltage pre-outs? Oh yeah, you'll get a LOT more bass with them." What idiots.
