Help with Changing Head Unit

So I'm wanting to get a new head unit for my car. I think I have everything figured out, but I was just wondering if someone could take a look at this and see if it is indeed what I need before I order things.

I have an 06 SS/SC with the Pioneer speakers. I have OnStar, but I don't use it, so don't care about keeping it working. Not planning on upgrading the speakers or sub or anything, just want to hook up the new radio to the stock speakers and be on my way.

I want to get this HU - Pioneer AppRadio (SPH-DA01). http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130APPR...dio-trade.html The only thing I'm finding people are saying bad about it is that it only has 1 RCA Preout. I still haven't really figured out what that does, so if it is really a problem, let me know. I can't find it locally in any stores (which is redic since I'm in Chicago...) so I'm having to buy everything online, and even then it's hard to find someone who is selling it.

Crutchfield is saying that I need this to make it work. http://www.crutchfield.com/p_127OS31...Interface.html Is that right? I know I need the antenna adaptor it comes with, but is the rest of that needed in an 06 since my door chimes aren't through the radio, and I don't care about OnStar? Is that the harness I need, or can I get it on it's own without all that other stuff?

I found this for getting the steering wheel controls to work. Seems simple enough that it's right. Axxess ASWC Steering wheel control interface — connects your car's steering wheel audio controls to an aftermarket stereo at Crutchfield.com

And don't worry, I have a friend who will be doing the install who knows what he is doing. I just want to get the parts "on my own" so to speak without him... heh.

sorry i didnt reply to ur pm just been busy. yes that would work as far as harness goes but if u trust ur friend to tap the fuse box properly then the metra 70-2103 is a much better option and cheaper too. as far as axxess ya that sounds right but ive never used those or checked to much into them so

Heh, I let him tune and do all the wrenching on my car, so I think I'll be ok with a fuse box tap...

Thanks!

me either but i didnt actually click on the links (opps)

oh and btw the whole 1 preout thing = only 1 amp (theoretically) most people want 3 on every radio out there so they could add front rear and sub

Hrm, weird about the links.

I just looked it up on Bestbuy to post another link to the radio, and actually found that one store in Chicago has it in stock. So I'll probably go check it out today in person. See if I actually will like the silly thing. haha.

Wouldn't the 1 Pre-Amp output limit the ability to use the Pioneer Amplifier to power the speakers? After some quick googling, this does appear to be the case:

I would refrain from this Radio if you do not want to bypass your Pioneer Amp.

well thats not actually the harness the OP would use. both the pac harness she is reffering to and the metra harness i recommend use speaker wires not rca preouts. but even if they did she could use that radio just wouldnt have front to back fade

fixed... lol my bad. right all that and ur good to go. you could also get whats called an "add a fuse" so simplify and have a somewhat more secure fuse tap but its not "required"

Went and checked it out today in person. Loved it, so I got it. They didn't have the harness in stock, so it's ordered.

No idea when I will get it installed, since car is going away for winter soon. But I'll be sure to update when it happens.

Yeah i decided to pick up this radio as well. You need the antenna adapter, wiring harness and the steering wheel control module and of course a dash kit. Mine is not in yet but will be this sat. Dont think you have to get the module for steering control of the bat. I believe its something you can add since it just plugs in. Mine is not installed yet since i am waiting on my subs I ordered from Provinyl.

Yeah you would just be able to add a single amp to this unit. Would assume you could get a amp that could power everything and you would be good. not sure if they are sub only rca though.

I would just call a shop that deal with them and ask.

I would get the steering wheel control interface right from the get go. Why would you want to pull the dash back apart later? Besides, it's really an easy install. The PAC box is a little bit harder to program while the Axxess (metra) claims to be automatic. I have a PAC in my car right now but will be installing the Axxess tomorrow along with my new Pioneer double DIN unit.

To hook either up it's pretty simple. You need to tag two factory wires, one you will feed power into and the other you will connect to the specified wire on your steering wheel control box. On my '06 SS the white/black (pin A10 in factory harness) wire gets +12V and the Dark Blue (pin A9) wire is the signal wire. Then just hook the steering wheel control box to the red switched power wire going to your HU and ground and you're done. Since you also have an '06 it will be the same for you but the '07+ cars are different.
