Im installing a 1600 watt amp and 2 10" subs 600 Watts. The set up use to be in my old 93 Ford Probe SE with a Pioneer head unit ...anyways. I got all new wiring for installing the setu up in my new cobalt ls and i ran into a problem.... I got all the wiring ran, positive, negative, remote line and the RCA jacks.... well there are no RCA jacks in the back of the stock head unit what do i do? And the remote line just splices into the solid blue coming out of the back of the H/U right? Here are some pix.

you need a line out converter. lol i have two of them. i would be willing if you want one of them to send it shipped for $20.

 

i believe you are going to need a inline converter that go inline from your 6x9's to the amp to read the lows.

Im not positive but i know thats what some people where doing b4. try to search it a lil bit and i know you'll come up w/ something.

Just using this as a refrence.... the RCA jacks would go in one end, but what about the other end. Kind of a noobie at the audio stuff.

usually they have speaker wire coming out of the other end. a pos and neg twice. so you have two pos and two neg. hook them up to the rear 6x9s pos and neg and you are good to go. also adjust the settings so you get the best sound.

 

ok well guys i just found this thread https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...line+converter And after reading it over it changed my mind and now im thinking about going with a aftermarket H/U. What do u guys think i should do? Also some suggestions about what exactly i need. Im guessing a wire harness and a trim piece?

You have a problem. You are trying to connect just a sub-woofer box to an existing Delphi / AC Delco radio. I am assuming you have the base model radio that doesn't have the Pioneer Subwoofer in the trunk. In that case, the only signal out you have are amplified speaker lines running directly to the speakers. You will need a line level converter as mentioned. But now, you will have to connect that somewhere, probably your rear speakers. Now you have line level at the back of the car, but your rear speakers are now disconnected, and the line you have is total spectrum. You don't want to plug that into your sub box, because it will sound like crap. You would have to take that line level signal, run into a device called a crossover, which separates the signal into lows and highs. Then you can plug your sub box into the crossover. Now you are going to need another amplifier for your original rear speakers.

There are other solutions. Does the amp on the sub-box have amplified inputs? Some amps do. That would allow you skip needing a converter, but you will still be sending a full spectrum signal to your sub, so again it will sound like crap. And that's just one problem.

There is no easy fix to your issue, and a converter alone isn't going to get you where you want to be. To use that sub box well, you would really need to start with a replacement head unit that has the kind of outputs that you need.

 

wow thanks a lot for all the info. Guess im going to either not installing anything or buy a new h/u. well im depressed now, should of known it wouldnt have been that easy.... guess i'll go put everything back together and buy a new h/u.

i used that line convertor i brought th car in cause all the paint was coming off the deck and they put in a new one

gm put in a new deck and a day later fried

they then looked into my trunk and saw the line convertor (i took my subs out just before i took the car in to the dealership)

the gentlemen that worked on car (the dealership outsources their audio electronics problems to a car audio shop in the aera)

they said it caused a problem, 100% the second time (not sure if it was for the frist time)

im not sure if it affected it the first time

but when he put the second one in he had to do some programing and the convertor was a load on the deck (minimal but still put a strain on the system and fried the deck)

I have an amp

it has two sets of RCA preamp inputs

and a high level input

i'm wondering if I can use that high level input to connect my rear speakers to it?

refer to image. I'm not sure if this will work though.

 

Berndogz, you should be able to connect your rear speaker wires to the part thats circled on your amp. Also most amps have a internal crossover of some sort, especially ones for subs that will allow a High/all/low crossover point, if you run a full signal into the amp and then switch that little switch by the High/all/low switch to the low side, you should only get the lows out of the inputs.

I had always wondered what happend to the rear speakers when you went with the highlevel into the sub amp or a line out converter...I think I'm going to have to go with a 6 channel line out converter for a while but I will be amping everything. how can you use the high output lines to send signal to the amp and still run the rear speakers?

 

I can't get a high level input wire harness like mine so I went to Canadian tire and found a line out converter AND a mini fuse add on

Mini fuse add on at Walmart is 9.99 though so I got it there. The line out converter is 24 dollars. EVERY place I called didn't have one, or anything for the fuse. Conclusion: Don't call and ask for things. Go and look yourself. I was getting pissed that no place had them.

So I put in the fuse add on into the rear view mirror light fuse. I might put it into the HVAC fuse sometime. With the add on I can pull it out and into any fuse in 5 seconds so it's worth the 10 bucks.

My buddy is tossing me some sick 4 gauge wire for my amp. I was running 10 gauge before. I hope to get it all installed during my lunch break at work tomorrow. I will take pics of everything I do including the fuse stuff and wiring the line out converter, not that it is going to be hard at all anyways.

I also got red paint for my calipers and hope to get that done this weekend.
