Rattle Elimination Tips and Tricks
Rattle Elimination Tips and Tricks
Since the Cobalt is a known rattle trap, we need a thread of the various tips/tricks to eliminate rattles/sqeaks. This is very relevant to audio since it drives most of us bonkers when the car rattles on a sub hit.
A few I've found:
1) The covers for the LATCH system (The anchors for baby seats). These tend to have several contact points between the top of the cover and the sides. Cover this with anti rattle tape (or even electrical tape) and this should reduce or eliminate the rattling from those on Sub hits. If you don't plan on using them, you can just skip tape and superglue it closed permantly.
2) Door armrest mounts. The clips for the screws that hold your window switch bezel in on the arm rest is metal on metal and has a tendency to make a very high pitched rattle. Remove these clips, add some anti rattle or vinyl electrical tape to the clips (to eliminate metal on metal contact) and reinstall.
3) Door wiring clips (The "Christmas tree" style ties). The one directly above the speaker isn't exactly in there tight, and will vibrate. Again, tape works wonders.
4) When removing panels, you should use new panel clips, however, a single layer of vinyl tape (Or I've heard of gasket tack) will work if you must reuse the clips.
5) The screw covers for the door arm rest can be silenced by using extra felt beyond that pathetic strip GM puts on there stock.
If you have any more, definately post. No need to post about second skin or Dynamat...etc... that is just a known method already.

I currently have my entire Dash off and I am wedging 1/4" dence foam under the vent ducts etc. as they rattle around in there.
I also saped up all the seams where the vent pipe connect to stop air from escaping under the dash where I dont want it.

The dome drove me crazy too.. but what I did was fold up a piece of scotch tape until it fit snug into the gap between the back of the clear cover and the gray outter piece, and put it in there.
i just want to stuff **** in there cause its right above my head that rattles...so i just peel it back, put stuff in there, and i can push it right back on?
everyone also consider the heat shield under the car...often this comes loose and causes a terrible rattle from underneath the car

i have a rattle in my console it's either near the shift linkage or behind the silver panel that shows the airbag lights below the radio. drives me nuts... i pull the cupholder out and stick my hand inside the console trying to find out where the rattle is coming from but can't find it.. cheap plastic.. sometimes i push on the faceplate and it goes away so maybe it's the trim around the radio..
Had this exact issue try cleaning the entire Weatherstrip or seal whatever you call it and the under side of the glass that touches it get all the dirt then lube the seal I just used original armorall lathered it on with a small brush and it's been good for a few months
