FYI since i got the same headunit. You dont need the ipod cable to play music off the ipod, you just need a usb cable like the one you use to sync the ipod on the computer. Only reason you would need it is if you want to play movies off your ipod, without the special cable it will only play sound and no video

im running the stock amp/sub also. Just make sure you run a power to the remote on the stock amp otherwise you will get no sound. I have no problems after 3 months. But after getting my amp/sub my stock sub is pretty much useless. Since i have the H/U set so the speakers play higher's and sub plays all the lows.

what harness are you talking about? i got rid on onstar quick, and i really can do without door chimes. the GMOS-lan-04 harness i was looking at was about $120. if i can reduce that, i'd be happy

thanks emporer. any tips/hints/ what not for me. im waiting about 3 more days to get my credit approved. i can get everything i need (as previously mentioned) for about $650. i have the cash now, just dont wanna spend that much at once, so i can finance it for 6 months with 0% interest.

again, i plan on running stock speakers / amp&sub in the beginning till i find a box that i like for the subs

might be changing my plans. work is getting a little slow and some people are losing hours (not me, thank you) don't know if i should go all out on head unit and the whole.

Emporer, your name keeps popping up the more i look at electronic threads...can i have yoour thoughts on what a good amp/sub would be for my Balt....

which way should the subs face (towards the side like stock, front, back)...

if i was to tap into stock h/u with am amp/sub, whats the best way and what parts...

any help would be great... leave your address so i can send you a check for your 2 cents.. :.)

it will fit if you don't need the rca but if you do you can cut the plastic behind the radio and remove the factory radio suport bracket let me get some pics.

i've never done a headunit install, so i have a friend at work helping with the wiring, and of course, Emporer.... i am fairly competent with wiring, but only after i have had help once before. once i am taught how to do something, i always remember and can do it by myself.

as for the wiring harness, it basically comes down to matching the colors. as i always do...RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH. find out what others have done, find out what problems to expect, etc. then its taking your time, read what color goes where, and matching them up. it's really not that difficult.

if it makes you guys feel any better one of the main reasons i recommend metra as a whole is in each component it has instructions on what to do. depending on the car i for the most part color match the cheap harnesses like everyone else but on any of the module or interface harnesses i sit my happy ass down and read the instructions to a T.... may not be necessary since ive done so many but its worth making sure its right.

as long as you buy metra or crutchfield its fairly easy to do with or without prior experience. they even list what tools you need

Agreed
The instructions on there dash kits have been a life saver on some of the installs I've done for friends.
My buddies Cavalier is one that comes to mind, since you have to take half the dash out to get at the bolts that hold the radio in but they walk you through it step by step.

OP- after you cut the plastic from behind the HU, there is a metal support bar that holds up the stock HU right behind the plastic, its held in with 4, 9/32 (7mm) nuts. its tricky to get at 2 of them but worth removing depending on the HU your putting in. Pinching wires up against metal may cause problems, pinching signal wires (RCA's) will cause problems, like high pitched interference.
