Unions aren't the problem, retirees are the problems... companies like Nissan, Toyota, etc. haven't been in this country long enough to be dealing with numerous retirees living longer than anyone thought, their time will come as well

the market as a whole sucks, GM sales were down 41%, which is bad... Nissan's were down 44%, Toyota will for the 1st time ever post a loss this year as well... guess what, the whole market sucks

i believe there is 2 toyota plants... ill get back to u on that.. my UAW president and i talked about it the other day... il. get back to u on that.

They have more than 2 in the US. They also pay better than GM but offer less benefits. They have temporarily shut down plants in the US over the last year too.

The Big 3's problem is retirement benefits. Due to technology improvements it takes far fewer workers to do the same job now compared to 50 years ago. This means they had far more employees than they do now even though they make more cars now. The retirees outnumber workers like 2-1 and pretty much you just have to wait for them to die. If they make it another 10 years it will be much closer to 1-1.

The Japanese have only been in the US for 25-30 years and didn't get big for another 15 years. They have very few retirees compared to workers although their rate is going to increase. But since they don't offer nearly as much for retirement benefits it still wont be as bad.

More cuts at Lordstown

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LORDSTOWN, Ohio -- Another round of layoffs at a sprawling General Motors Corp. plant in northeast Ohio could mean revenue will dip about $2.5 million in the village that calls the site home, the mayor said today.

As the auto industry deals with its worst sales slump in 26 years, GM said Monday it is trimming production to one shift at the Lordstown plant that makes the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5.

The revenue drop would mean road paving and recreation programs may have to be scaled back to save money, said Lordstown Mayor Michael Chaffee. But so far, there are no plans to reduce the village’s 30 full-time workers.

Lordstown Council met Monday to discuss adjusting insurance packages, which will save the village about $115,000 to $120,000 this year. Village workers have accepted a pay freeze.

“We’re still providing very nice coverage to our employees,” Chaffee said.

Lordstown’s long-term future appears secure because GM plans to build its new small car, the Cruze, there in 2010. “As bad as things are, we’re still better than most,” Chaffee said.

GM said Monday it is eliminating the complex’s afternoon shift April 6, laying off 800 workers. Between Feb. 9 and that date, the assembly plant will alternate weekly between using the early day and afternoon shifts.

The new layoffs will leave just one-third of the complex’s hourly workers, or 1,400 people, on the job.

GM announced in November and December that it was laying off 2,000 other Lordstown workers because it was slowing down the speed of the assembly line and eliminating the midnight shift.

The midnight shift was added last August when gasoline prices were spiking and the plant struggled to produce enough cars to meet demand.

A labor contract provides that laid-off workers receive about 85 percent of their regular pay in supplemental benefits from the company and state unemployment insurance.

I just find it hard to understand why the country is in the position it's in. This article states this is the "worst sales slump in 26 years". I know things are bad but things must have been pretty bad 26 years ago in 1983 for sales to be off that much. Even so, GM, and I imagine the country, was able to dig in and come back bigger and better than ever without BILLIONS of $ in help from the government. Many car companies have gone belly up over the years. Some merged with other car companies and some were bought outright by others. I'm 65 so I can remember a few. The only car company that ever got fed help was Chrysler. And they came back too. How about Harley Davidson? They didn't get any cash. But Reagan DID give them some protection from imports in the form of tariffs, (although they didn't refer to it as such). Maybe I'm just too old and able to remember how it used to be. Survival of the fittest with maybe a little help. In addition. I am a retired truck driver that used to run a round trip from Maybrook, NY to Cleveland, OH (actually Richfield, OH) three times a week. I remember in the early 80s driving across the OH Turnpike, past that plant and wondering where all the people who parked their chopstick cars in the parking lot got the *****! Now don't get me wrong but why should WE, the American people, bail out the very people that DIRECTLY helped put GM in the position they're in right now. Remember. This is BEFORE the far eastern manufacturers had assembly plants in the US so that' not a legitimate excuse. I received a letter right after I took delivery of my Cobalt last Oct. asking me to help get the word out to get the government to help them. I sent a letter back telling them I would send a personal letter to EVERYBODY when they FIRED all the owners of foreign badged cars in their parking lot. And THAT'S the way I feel!!!

Let me understand. You think YOU should be the only one that should be able to buy a new car?? Think about it. If it wasn't for the UAW the chopstick manufacturers wouldn't be paying their workers as much as they are. Unions RAISE the wages of EVERYBODY working in like industries. YES! I think there should be changes in the pension provisions. But don't put it all on "the unions". Another sad fact is their is very little taught in school about the labor movement in this country. If they did peolpe would be more familiar with what Henry Ford said once. "WAGES DO NOT RAISE PRICES. PRICES RAISE WAGES". Whether you want to believe it or not, labor unions have help make this country what it is today. And I DON'T mean the "crisis" we're in right now. This is caused by the greed of the American people, big business and the corrupt banking industry. Americans have come to want EVERYTHING. RIGHT NOW. And they want it for FREE. They live outside their means. Why do I really care??????????????????????????????????????????? For my grandkids.

the banks got us in this mess.... its that simple.... THEY are the ones who were giving mortgages to people that they knew damn well couldn't afford them, they were the ones loaning for cars that they knew people couldn't afford....

and here is where it gets funny.....Congress was quick to jump in and bail those jokers out, and THEIR CEOS and what not didn't have to have an answer for where they were spending the money like the Auto Industry is having to do right now... it was just give, give, give with them and they spent, spent, spent on stupid ass ****.... Bonuses, new jets, parties, you ****ing name it

don't blame unions, blame our banks and our dumb ass Goverment...
