GM tightens up usage of SS label

There are only three Cobalt models...the base, the mid-level SS, and the SS/SC. LS, LT and LTZ are simply trim levels, they're no different from each other aside from option groups.

Its about time they open their eyes. Now they just have to make the SS monte and impala rear wheel drive and gm's set. 305hp..front wheel drive...come on gm. I hope they upgrade they current SS line up instead of just narrowing down to certain cars. Like bigger breaks or a stick option on trailblazer SS would be pretty cool.

Gee.... I'm so glad I bought my 2.4L Cobalt before they took the plastic SS badge off the sides and back. I mean.... there's no way I would've considered buying this car if it weren't for those pieces of plastic on it.
I've never seen a group of people get so worked up over a stupid badge on a car. This site is ridiculous sometimes.

Okay, as usual, a few points
1) I think the 2.4 cobalt was given the SS title because it was basically GM's attempt at grabbing some potential Civic SI buyers. It wasn't a bad idea per se but they probably could have chosen something besides SS.
2) I think referencing the 60's when refering to the SS nameplate is kinda rediculous. Its about to be 2007 so lets do what we think is best for todays market, not yesterdays. Let the Camaro and Corvette trim levels worry about nostalgia.
3) IMHO, i think there should be an acceleration requirement to have the SS name. (kind of like Cadillac's V series) For example, the car would have to do 0-60 in 6.0 or less.
4) This is a great idea if chevy wants its performance trim to be as respectable as the SRT line up.

i don't know why i comment on here... this site is a bit ridiculous at times, but why not just offer the Cobalt 2.4 as an RS package... yay... you get pieces of plastic, your wheels and the feel that you're driving something other than an uplevel Gramma's Cobalt.
yay.

Actually, ever since the first SS, a 1961 Impala, the SS just meant that it had a few extra trinkets. It wasn't that it has a billion horsepower or anything. Not until the later 60's did SS truely mean some pavement destroying monster. Until they make cars like the Chevelle and stuff again, the SS will never truely stand for what it did. Try as they may, it won't happen. The SS's are still known, and still get the respect. But it'll never again be the same as a '69 Camaro SS 396 or a Chevelle SS 454. Sorry GM.

And all was not sweetness and light with a muscle car... you're lucky if you got 15mpg, try getting them to start on a cold morning, traction? (heh, what traction?), most had no ammenities like A/C, cruise, tilt wheel... You getting my drift here? Put a 2002 CamaroSS up against the 1969 version of itself and that 2002 is going to hand the 69 it's ass every time. The only thing that I miss about that bygone era is the sounds... the wild sounds that unmuffled four-barreled V8's mad on a Saturday night... that is where the FWD crowd will always lose out... we just don't wheeze hard enough to make those righteous, melodious wonderful sounds.
It's threads like this that make me realize how old I really am and how confused auto culture has become... i am from the times of the muscle cars, i can remember the first confused fumblings with smaller, more powerful engines. I can remember when we longed to have something domestic to roll up on the set with... and remember the disappointment when people would laugh at the Cavaliers and Sunfires, regardless of how well they ran. The days of the musclecar are over. Accept it... the Cobalt SS, the Solstice, the Ion Redline, the Sky, the Focus ST, the Civic Si, the Tiburon GT, the Golf GTI, ad infinitum are the NEW musclecars... these are the new cars that in 20 or 30 years, everyone will want because the market will have moved on to something else. This time has become the new Musclecar era and by placing the 'SS' on the Cobalt, and maybe even the Malibu (even though I didn't personally agree with the decision) has ratified that. You, me, the retard down on the corner with a primer gray Civic and the dick up on the view with mom's Audi S4 are the new muscle car guys...
Just something to think about.

Yeah man, I will certainly agree with Adirondack Cobalt. I mean, I've been around true muscle cars my whole life. My grandpa used to rebuild and sell Corvette Sting Rays. He had a handfull of off the wall rare muscle like buick GS Stage II's and the like. His new toy is a black SSR. My uncle, grandpa and cousin built a '64 Cobra. My cousin has a 2004 (I think) Mustang GT. I mean, I never owned (nor will I) for several years, any sort of true muscle car. The closest that I come is my Monte. That thing has very nice, smooth power, but certainly no muscle car. A guy I work with has a 70's Old's 98 coupe with a 455 in it. Now THAT is a torque monster. Eventhough it's only got the V6 in it, I still greatly enjoy driving my'85 GP sometimes. The old carb, the RWD, it's just classic. I mean, at my job right now, I'm a valet. So I've driven everything from Taurus's and Tempo's to Corvette's and Porsche's. Even driving a Porsche Carrara doesn't compare to the feeling that I'd have driving a '69 Z28 or something like that. I mean, that's true living history right there. Nothing will compare. Do you have cars out now that would destroy most of those old muscle cars right out of the showroom? Surely. but nothing will ever replace that 396 rumbling ahead of you in a '71 Nova SS as you wait at the stoplight for it to change. That, to me, is as good as it gets.
