Cobalt SS\Sc brakes

hello forum members

I have a question about the brakes on our SS\SC.
Have any of you had to change your brakes yet "rotors & pads "

Went to the dealership for my oil change and they claim my cobalt needs brakes "pads and rotors" and it only has 30,000 on the clock.

My car is my DD to work and back home and its all highway so I cant see my cobalt needing brakes at this time " stop well and there is no pulsating in pedal" .

Do you think they are feeding me a line of BS or are the brakes on these car made that cheap??

Thanks in advance members

I have 52,000 KMs on my car (32,500 miles) and i thought i needed brakes because the rotors are a little warped and there was some low speed squeeling. I bought new ones and took the wheels off and there is like 60% of the pad left still.

I drive about 180kms per day all highway which explains the warped rotors from hi-speed stops but not much wear on the pads.

Take a wheel off and check yourself...i bet yours are fine too.

Some people have had brake issues with these cars, but not everyone will. Mine look great after 22k miles. I expect the fronts will go well over 50k at this rate.

i changed mine at 23K. my pads were shot. but when i took them off i realized that the rotors were also shot. they felt like a warped vinyl record (well maybe thats pushing it) but they were pretty bad. some people have the problem, some don't. i think its all about how you drive.

*front only. the back was fine. pads and rotors on the back are still stock

P.S. dont pay them for it. there are only 4 bolts to take the pads out. you need a 14mm wrench and a 15mm wrench. and a C clamp. if you need me to I'll write a how-to for ya with pics.

I had to change mine at 45k miles and they were beyond needing change, it was metal to metal and the pad/rotor was melted

My 07' has 8000/km on it and I've had "lazy brakes" since delivery. I took it in @ 3000/km but GM said they couldn't duplicate the problem ......of course ( they drove it around the block presumably).

At any rate, I made it clear that the rotors would be replaced (no charge) when the time comes. It's obvious that the brake booster is faulty which is not uncommon on these cars.
Specifically, my problem is that when I release the brakes, they take their sweet time doing so and continue to provide resistance. Bumper to bumper traffic is a real problem because I have to rev the engine quite high to overcome the brakes, and when I depress the clutch to stop.......IT STOPS RIGHT NOW!.........no roll period (because the brakes are still clamped slightly). So, premature wear and warpage of the rotors is a given.
Perhaps you have a milder case of the same affliction (you'd know it if was as bad as mine).
Other than that, it runs perfectly.

I had bad grooves but no warping at 28k miles. Took it in to the dealer who cut the rotors, and then only a couple weeks later, they were warped. At a little over 30k miles, I swapped the stock rotors for the GM Performance drilled and slotted (front and rear), and I'm at 39k miles now with absolutely no issues. I even used (new) factory pads, and still no signs of grooving.

brake rotors are a problem but to 36000 there under warranty only brake pads are not under warranty they are a wear part . a lot of cobalt rotors are turned under warranty. mine were turned under warranty.

36000, thats good to know. I'm not sure if that applies to Canadian Balts given the warranty differences..........I'll look in to it .
Thanks for the info.
