Right to see if it was still the correct weight and viscosity thats recomended not to see what brand it was.

No the dealer won't but GM corporate might very well do that when you try to warrenty your whole engine. And you best believe they can tell the different brands apart.

If you buy the high performance car you better be ready to put the high performance parts and consumables into it.

the point of that is that cheap filters such as fram work better with synthetic oil, bc they are usually single-layered. with synthetic, the less it filters the better, especially with mobil one. you can really mess up your engine over the long run by making your synthetic oil "too clean". i wish i could explain it as well as the mechanic that schooled me on this, but you just have to realize that synthetic is nothing like regular oil and the rules are different.

I changed my oil in the SS/SC for $32 and a little bit of time. It was worth saving the money.

I would say it should be Mobil for the SS, the motor was designed for it and Mobil synthetic does not compare to any other synthetics out there, its really good **** thats why they charge more for it. There are other GM products that use Mobil 1.

As for the instructions:
I have personally read the instructions in a GM service manual and the SS oil change is the same as in any 2.2 ECOTEC engine except that you should lossen one of the supercharger pipe bracket bolts so that you can move it out of the way.

oh just a tip, if you want to save money at the dealership go and get a case of Mobil 1 at costco/samsclub and provide the oil for the dealership. Thats if you have a membership, if not then i don't think it would be worth it for you to get the oil there, try walmart too. Dealerships always have a higher markup.

i paid $43 for mobil1 and a fram filter to do it myself. the first time i did it i thought i was going to have to remove the supercharger to access the filter, but i lucked out and found a long pair of channel locks. it barely fit and i could only make 1/4 turns, but it was well worth the money and time saved, and knowing it was done right.

Go to Wal-Mart and get the 5qt jug of Mobil 1. Should be about $19.00. And do not buy a FRAM filter next time. From what I have been reading.. they suck!! The ACDelco oil filter supposedly are the best we can buy. The filter itself is better quality. Check your owners Manual for the part number. I remember i posted some part numbers about 3-4 weeks ago in a similar topic but if you order the filter from gmpartsdirect.com the filter is only $4.48. Cheaper than the FRAM. I'm also turned off by FRAM because i just changed my gf air filter in her 03 cavalier about 3 months ago and i went to check it a couple days ago and the damn filter had collapsed inside the black housing. The foam on the filter broke off on one side and caused that side to dip down so crap could get into the engine. Boy am i glad i checked that would not have been good. So i'm a little turned off by FRAM now

I was able to do it with an extension and 1 1/4" socket. Little tricky to find a place it will go straight down and fit properly, but once you find it the first time, it's pretty easy.

I hate how the cap is cheap plastic that can strip very easily.

DO NOT GET FRAM FOR GODS SAKES! Fram is the worst filter out there because one of the pieces is made out of cardboard.
All of these filters are made by FRAM avoid them at all costs!
Fram Extra Guard (std)
Fram Tough Guard (different media?)
Fram X2 (Silicone ADBV, Fuzzy media)
Fram Extended Guard(same as the X2)
Mileguard (Jiffy)
Honda (although some are alleged to be made by Filtech)
Chrysler line up except for the Cummins
Penzoil
Deffense
Canadian Tire

Personally I go for AC Delco or Wix (Napa line), Purolator is also good!

Talking about Fram filters, A faw years ago I did bunch of maintance work on a Chevy P/U., plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter and air filter. Well after words took it out for a test drive, damn thing couldn't get out of its own way! After beating my head against the wall for a few days, I found out the air filter was severelly restricted. The paper element was too backed together. Haven't purchased any Fram products since.

I hope their service department is better than their sales. I would have bought a blue SS/SC w/ everything but the G85 and Onstar, but the salesman walked me to the door and told me to come back when I was serious after I asked him for a test drive. Needless to say I didn't buy a car from them, but did roll up after I bought one and talked to his manager.

i was told by a mechanic in the family (25+yrs experience) that with the superior synthetic oils such as mobil1, you NEED to use the crappiest filter you can find. a good filter can actually rob certain synthetics of their lubricating "properties"
i wish i could remember everything he told me, but bottom line= only use crap filter with mobil1. this may cause a few bs flags to go up, but i encourage anyone to first...find a mechanic with that much experience and ask him.

My dealer gave me free oil changes and tire rotations for 1 year, didn't even have to ask about it.
