Is going to a straight cut gear for track cars any more expensive than just a close ratio set?
I know Andrew (terry11) had talked to John Shepard about making a stronger gear set. He was willing to do it just like he did for dsm and beyond but no one wanted to fork up the cash.

emco wanted 10,000 up front for I dont know how many gear sets....roughly 900 each gear set iirc.
that is cheaper than making a pinion for to match a crown wheel...straight cut gears are not necessarily stronger. I ran straight cut c r gears BITD in my Mini street/race cars. I was young and didnt care about the noise. It was loud. It was a blast. Firestone slicks on the street? exciting. I was young and stupid.

Before that I ran straight pipe side exhaust on my (short geared 4.3:1) Morris station wagon with an MGB engine. I am surprised I am not deaf now. BITD I would make a trip from Mt Trembant race track to Hamilton ON ( about 500 miles) flat towing my race car, and not be able to hear for a day.

so these days? s/c gears: price/noise/benefit? not viable..

Hey John just wanted to say thanks for the very fast shipping with the check valve and tow hooks. We are shortening up the PCV hoses liek you had suggested. With this new turbo setup I actually now have a 3" Werks intake instead of the 4" so we should have any rubbing of the hoses coming of the valve cover. I'll snap some pictures when Matt finishes everything up this week

I have v.2 yyz springs and xxx sway bar. I'm considering getting koni yellow rears. Are they worth it? The rears seem easy and I've heard the rears are most affective. I've heard good things but there's not a whole whole lot of info on them. Are they worth getting and will they improve my setup a lot? Also does anyone know of the cheapest place to buy them now? With black friday coming up someone probably has them on sale.

Unless you find members selling them at a loss you're looking at about $550 cheapest on Koni's. That's what ZZP sells them for but they don't split them up. Just buy all four if you can for Black Friday.

thats a ^^^^good price. I paid 268.00 just for the rears and thought I had a deal. I also paid over 1700 for a set of specially valved Konis for race use...complete and installed in struts , for sure but a very expensive undertaking to do custom revalves.

Eh not interested in fronts way to much of a pain and to much money to do. Especially when I just got realigned not to long ago. All I want are the rears. Will the rears alone make a significant difference over the fe5 shocks?

You don't mess with anything that would cause you to need a realignment when you do the fronts.

If you haven't changed anything else (like the springs), no alignment is required. If you also changed to aftermarket springs, get an alignment done.

Oh hmm well still even without having to do an alignment still not interested in drilling out the struts and messing with those.
Do the rears make a significant difference over stock shocks?

^^^^ it depends on what you call significant. No disrespect to anyone, but some folks cant seperate soft springs binding with stiff springs ride harshness. So if you do an A/B/A test you will find the rear koni makes a difference over stock.

after about 10k miles, you will notice on stock front struts on an A/B/A test, better small body movement control with new stock struts over 10k mile stock struts. and much better damping control overall koni versus stock.

but if you dont do the testing, you will probably not notice the deterioration of a twin tube shock over time.

Until you install new shocks.

then you will notice an improvement.

my advice? go with the CED YYZ package, stick them on and enjoy.

I found the front Konis to make a much more noticeable difference than the rears.
I procrastinated on doing the fronts for 3 months because I dreaded the drilling and cutting. Turned out not to be a big deal at all. Just read the how-to carefully and make sure you have all the right tools.
