Does Cold Weather Cause Sounds And Vibrations?
Has anybody experienced weird sounds and vibrations comming from their suspension when it's really cold out.
This morning I had weird sounds and I even felt some vibration in my front passinger side suspension. I kinda felt like a mount was bad or something. Also I noticed that my rear brakes queek really bad when I go in reverse. It sounds like the brakes are sticking a bit. But it doesn't feel like it. All of this goes away when the car is driven about a mile or so, or when all the juices start to flow. This just started to happen as the weather began getting colder.
Has this happened to anybody else?
Is this a normal thing that occurs? or should I bring the car into the dealer?
I drive a 06 Cobalt SS/SC

i'm gonna say yes, but I was also hoping someone else could confirm this same thing, so don't quote me. But just this morning (for about the 4th/5th time this winter) my brakes have squeeked really bad and my shocks sound rough... almost rusted... going over bumps. I've also noticed it's harder to shift until everything is warmed up. My squeeking brakes don't go away until I've driven about 2 or 3 miles. The shocks sound and respond normal, though, after your estimated 1 mile. And I definitely do hear some moaning and groaning from the car in reverse.
Again, don't quote me... but I'm gonna say "yes" and thanks for confirming I'm not the only one.
(it's about 14*F here)

yes i have a Vibration in the cold. once i park it for the night and the next morning when im on my way to work i will get a thumping sound and a vibration as if the wheels are out of balance. then a few miles down the road (assuming once the tires warm up) the noise and vibration stops. i thought it was the tires out of balanced but i balanced them again. and also swapped out rims and tires and i have the same thing again and again in the cold. also i get the brake noise only sometimes though. but i wouldnt be too worried about it unless it get worse.
it depends exactly on the sounds, but you have to realize that parts go from freezing cold to burning hot, so they're going to expand, contract, and make sounds... my coolant was 16 degrees when i started the car, and in a matter of minutes it goes from 16 to 190... it's the same with all the other parts... even if the car is warmed up, the brakes are still freezing, along with the other parts...
Yes the cold air makes the suspension contract just a little more than normal. Then when you get in the car and take off and the suspension is warming up you hear the creaks and get the vibes... thats my theory and im sticking to it !

This is acually my first winter with it so I never experienced 6 degree weather with it until now.
Thanks for the input.
Just so you all know, I had this grinding noise coming from my front passenger side tire suspension area whenever it got below freezing. It was a plastic to road kinda of grinding noise. I let Saturn have it overnight so they oculd drive it this morning when it was 3 degrees outside. It ended up being a torn front sway bar bushing that had no lubrication due to its design and tore. They replaced it with new ones, and apparently the supplier has redesigned them recently because they did not look the same. I have an Ion 3 QC with the FE3 suspension. Just thought you all should have the info.
ive had similar experiences and still do to this date, the squeeky back break is normal...the dealership i went to said it's normal in the cold and if it's been sitting in the cold for a while and start reversing it'll make that noise and for the shocks, i get that too, first speedbump i see in my alley it sounds like my shocks are rusty but they arent but after that, like literally 2 mins after of just driving it, then there's no more noise anywhere...
I've never had a car that didn't make some sort of extra noises when it was really cold. Everything should return to normal pretty quickly as it warms up; if not then maybe you should take it in.
I agree with the above poster. I think most cars make funny noises and run rough when it's really cold. My friend has a Lexus and it does the same thing. I don't worry about it because once the car is warmed up it's Ok.
the car will make noise in the morning when everything is warming up. A lot of times you will here lots of cabin noises cus the tires are cold and are stiff so vibrations are higher than normal
