Is driving to another dealer worth it, what would you do?

Here is my situation. I am the market for a Cobalt SS/SC. I want the Arrival Blue Color. I drove a 2006 with Onstar, Head/Side Curtain Airbags, XM Radio, and Sunroof with Map pocket lights. I really like the car, drives awesome. My problem is I found a 2005 at a dealer about 5 hours away. The only thing it does not have is Onstar and I was really thinking about getting it just for safe thought if anything went wrong I would have someone there that could help. Here is my delima I will have to dicker down the price on a 06 where as I can get this 05 at GMS. What would you do?

5 hours is a long drive, but I would go with the better price.

Tell the guy with the 06 that you were considering the 05 at GMS. It will pressure him to cut a better deal. This may be in the form of more for your trade in (if you are trading in a car).

Actually I don't have anything to trade because A) My father owns the car that I currently drive and have driven for the past 10 years. B) He doesn't want to give it up, because it gets pretty good gas mileage and C) He doesn't think I can get anything out of it. I am sort of convinced of the same thing the car is 10 years old a Toyota, and its only worth about 996.00 according to edmunds on a trade in. My father being the stickler that he is doesn't think he should give up his car for such little money, considering he can still drive it to a from work for cheaper gas.

Are you sure you looked at the 06 SS/SC or just the 06 SS!
There is a differance and to the best of my knowledge no 06 SS/SC's have been produced. All 06 SS/SC production is still on hold, I just checked.
I wouldn't hold my breath for an 06 SS/SC, if you can get an 05, GRAB IT!

I would go for the 05. here, the next chevy dealer is 10 miles away, and there are 6-7 major ones in the stl area. but for you, tell your dealer to either ship it in or give you the same price on the 06.

Yes I am sure it is a 06, thats what is on the sticker and the vin number etc. And it is the supercharger I drove it. I am thinking I can dicker my way down to around Invoice or a little above, what do you think.

Can you post a few pics? I'm very curious about this car, has anyone else seen an 06 SS/SC? Are you sure they didn't put an 06 sticker on an 05 car? They did this with the 04 cavaliers, put 05 stickers on them eventhough it was an 04 car.

I ask because the hold notice went out even before 06 production started and has never to the best of my knowledge been pulled.

See Below, last update was 7/14/06:

1AP37 SS Coupe models are on hold
(UN0) Radio is on hold (1AK***)
SS Supercharged Coupe (1AP37) w/o (ASF) side curtain airbags is on hold

this is kind of funny. My brother works at a Chevy dealer about 12 miles away (Adirondack Chevrolet/Pontiac/Buick, Elizabethtown NY). I originally ordered my Cobalt through them, but they bungled the order and changed it because they felt that there was no way I could afford it.

The Chevy dealer I normally do business with (Hometown Chevy, Whitehall NY) is about 70 miles away. I have bought three cars from them. I'd travel for a deal, especially if it's really what you want. Nothing sucks more than buying something you really don't want. I bought a Cavalier back in the day like that and spent the next five years alternating between love, hate and frank admiration of how tough that bastard was.

Have fun.

Do it! I think that driving to another dealer is worth it, especially since you get to drive your new SS on the road back, helping to break it in.

I drove to Superior Chevy in Kansas City, 4 hours away to look at an Arrival Blue LS that had the options I liked and was going to buy. However, when I got there I saw my orange SS and that's all she wrote. Plus I had a blast driving my new SS back 4 hrs that night, with Hi-Pos following me cuz of the wing. I would say definitely do it if they have a car you like, plus the GMS pricing is a great deal.

Actually I really want On Star and the car here locally (06) has it. Yes this 06 has the GM logo on both front Fenders at the lower bottom. I know its an 06, because that was the only change. They had it out on the lot before they sold the last 05 they had, now its in the showroom. The dealer really is trying to get me to buy this one. I think I will use my leverage and say hey lets get closer to the Invoice pricing. My dad seems to think I can negotiate a lower price and the financing will not be that much different in the long run.

Also has anyone heard of getting below the true market value price that Edmunds posts or is this what the usual sucker pays for a car who has no negotiating skills. The thing is I am willing to walk. I could tell you what happened at a dealership this weekend that would probably make you want to throwup.

I was on Cars.com last weekend I put in a request for info on any SS/SC in the area. I live in the general Washington DC area. On Monday I got emails and phone calls from two salesman at the same dealership in the DC area, the only thing they knew was that I wanted a Cobalt they didn't have any idea it was the SS/SC. So one of the salesman calls me on Thursday and ask me what she could do for me. I told her that I was looking for an SS/SC she says well we have one in stock and its Rally Yellow. So I told her fine I would come in and look at it on Saturday when I was off of work. So Friday rolls around and I found an 05 in Arrival Blue in a nieghboring state although it was about 5 hours away from where I live. So I contacted the dealer about this car and he says yes he had it in stock. So I got to thinking this one dealership that is closer to me has been calling me why couldn't they get the car and sell it to me. So I emailed this salesman about it and she gets back to me via phone and says she could do that but I would need to come in and "finalize numbers and come to an agreement, before she could get it and it would be Monday when I could pick up the car". Well I said fine I will be there on Saturday. Meanwhile my local dealer where I drove the 06 calls my father and tells him that they have an 05 that is in Blue on the lot. Well it turns out it was the just the 06 and the salesman did not know right off hand.

So I drive to the dealership outside of DC (I won't give any names but its huge they have 18 dealerships in the area). So they were pretty busy and I told the girl what time I would be there. She takes forever to get to us and we were standing there for 30 minutes waiting for her. She finally comes up to us and says well sorry I am with another customer bare with me. Well another 10 minutes passes. She finally decides to shovel me off to this other guy. Well this guy walks up to me after she introduces herself to me and he shakes my hand. Well I am taller then him by about 4 inches and he immiedietly starts chatting up my father and ignoring me. At first I wasn't annoyed until I realized that he thinks my dad is the one buying the car.

He continued to do this stuff. Then he proceeds to tell me that everything is standard on the SS/SC and that they are hard to get as they had just sold the Yellow model they had today. Well my dad says well what options do you want on this car I said at least XM, Side airbags and Sunroof. The guy repeats again this is an awesome car I love them and those options are "standard". I thought to myself you don't even know what your talking about. Anyways my dad says "Well how much is a downpayment to get this car here?"

The guy says well I don't know will have to find out about financing through the differnet banks first. My Dad says "Well he is already pre approved through GMAC."

Granted I look young and do not look my age of 28 I look more like 24, but this guy just looks stunned. I hand him the preapproval that says I was preapproved for such and such amount lets just say it is more then enough to take care of the car and then some. He says and I quote "Is this in your name?"

I said yes it is. Heck my name was right up at the top of the preapproval sheet.

Needless to say he well let me go talk to my manager and see what we can do. Long story short he takes forever I got pissed its 30 minutes later before he left me sitting there and he finally comes back and he says I can sell the car for 22900.00 I said wait a minute what happened to the GMS pricing. He says well this is what my manager can do you for you on this car. I said no thanks see ya. The guy looks stunned.

Moral of the story if your a car salesman don't assume anything, don't prejudge someone because of how old you think they are. Bottom line is I will never ever do business with that dealership again because of one salesman stupidity.

The more I think about it I kind of want the On Star on the local 06 and if I can talk the salesman down on this car then I will buy it. I will get a discount through my Insurance if I do.

they don't make '06 SS/sc's yet. You're really looking at the 2.4L all motor SS.

Hey a little update I ended up getting the 2006 SS/SC from the local dealer. Onstar, Xm Radio, Side Curtain Airbags and Sunroof. I negotiated the price down to $22900.00 with destination. I pick her up on Thursday.
