Dyno runs/tuning

Hey guys. Im going to the dyno tomorrow and i was wondering what gear you guys have used. The first time he had it in 4th and I was wondering if another gear would be more accurate/better.

3rd = underdriven, 4th = slightly overdriven

generally with 4th being slightly overdriven it should give you some slightly better power numbers in a turbod application.... assuming your clutch can handle the extra drivetrain load in the lower-mid rpm range that is.

I personally have to do 3rd gear pulls otherwise my stock clutch slips something fierce

It will be minimal difference between the 2 unless you trigger the COT protection in 4th.

Everyone loves a good 4th gear torque spike to brag about peak numbers though Nick!

No? Seems to me that loading the turbo in an overdriven gear would give you a larger torque spike as compared to an underdriven gear. It sure does it well in diesel applications at least. Granted we're talking a much larger and laggier turbo, however it is still a turbo setup non the less.

Ehh oh well..

Come on Nick. Defend your point better than just brushing what I have to say off as bupkis and throwing random numbers at me man. I like to think you know better than to assume I'm just going to make **** up and throw it out there like that.

Granted I may not know as much as you about every performance application, but everything I've ever known about dynoing a turbo vehicle has always dictated that loading up the turbo in a taller gear will yield higher power numbers.. especially torque. Whether it is only 5-10whp or not. Hense my earlier statement: "generally with 4th being slightly overdriven it should give you some slightly better power numbers in a turbod application"

I'm not trying to be an argumentative jerk here by any means btw. You're just coming off as a tad condescending

I defended it.. You can make tq just fine in 3rd and we saw no difference in 4th. What else do I need to say here? lol

Just throwing out my .02 cents...

I've done about a couple dozen or so dyno pulls on my car and there is almost no difference between 3rd and 4th gear pulls besides the fact that 4th takes longer lol. When I was stock and putting down the base numbers (in my sig), they came up within 1-2 hp and 1-2 tq between 3rd and 4th gear. We did 1 pull in 4th and the guy doing the dyno said it took too long to do the pull... I have no idea what he was going on about, but I digress. He then did the next 2 pulls in 3rd and the numbers were pretty much exactly the same. Tuned, they came up almost the same, within 1-2 hp and tq from a 3rd gear to a 4th gear pull. These cars are very consistant.

Was that long enough of an explenation?
