Had it for a week...in the shop....
Hi everybody! I'm new to the site, had some problems with my old account (could not activate it fully, tried a dozen times) so I just made a new Email account and all seems to be well. So I'm the proud owner of a Black 2006 Chevy Cobalt SS/Sc with 30,000mi. A week after having it (died last Sunday after wrestlemania) I was getting on the highway, tried to shift into 4th and it just wouldn't go in. My Revs were moving but it seemed like it was stuck in neutral, I couldn't hook up the transmission. The car was running/ shifting perfectly prior to this, and I have been babying it. So i pulled off the highway and let it sit for a minute. I start it up, starts fine. Put it into first we start move but theres a TERRIBLE grinding noise. This is my first 5 speed so I could not diagnose the noise. The clutch pedal also had a weird to feel to it, it almost felt like a spongy brake pedal. I thought it was a linkage problem or maybe the slave cylinder went. So I had it hauled to the dealership and they told me.... "Something in the differential let go, which screwed the transmission, which in turn screwed the clutch" Thankfully I have bumper to bumper for another 10,000 miles and drive train till 100,000 miles. I was really disappointed by the car at this point but my dealership (Bennet Chevrolet in New Milford) REALLY went out of their way to accommodate me. Got a new Chevy Malibu as a loaner. They paid for the tow to the lot and everything. I am slightly discouraged with the car and fear that its drive train is fragile.... If anybody's had a similar situation, please let me know. So I'm picking the car up tonight after work, no charge for anything, of course. Ya know what, its almost a blessing in disguise because now I have a whole new drive train minus the engine.
could be a good thing. Not a whole lot of complaints with the cobalt on this site. The last person just may have abused it, who knows. If they genuinely replaced the whole thing, i wouldn't worry about it, but make sure they didn't just replace individual parts trying to save costs of the repair.

First, welcome to the site.
Second, it is possible that the previous owner was not nice to the car and you just bought it already abused, near broken.
There have been a few trannys that have gone for now good reason, but as long as you aren't crazy and abusive, the tranny/drivetrain will hold up.
Third, start adding lots of mods and you should discount the latter part of number 2

This summer (when I actually have cash) I plan on doing a few mods until I'm more comfortable with the car. Probably Just Intake Exhaust this summer and one of those Engine Dampers from Ingalls to get me going. Ive gotten past all of the immature having to flex muscle by driving like an ******* constantly so I'm really going to take care of this car .....until the TC/SS comes out!!! haha
