Obviously you aren't interested in high performance driving and just want a nice car to tool around in with some power to play with every now and then, so for you it's totally cool. However, that is not the case with most people your age. They want to go fast and push the limits around the corners, but the problem is they don't know the limits or what to do when they exceed the limits.

I know that one day when I have kids, I'm going to send them through a racing school and have them attend many autocross events before I let them get their license. Then if they decide they want to go fast, they don't kill themselves, and they know how to respect the vehicle. Racing school and autox can be expensive, but it's less expensive than a new car, and a lot less heartache than losing a loved one.
I took street corners decently fast in my Cobalt but never auto crossed it. However, I attended Team O'Neil Rally school and currently rally cross my dads WRX at local SCCA events. Was first in my class last year till we ran into engine problems. I totally agree with what you are saying though. The main issue at hand is parents buying their kids expensive cars. I have to pay for my car so I don't beat on it and take extremely good care of it. You gain a level of respect for you're items knowing if you **** it up it will fall back on you.

Out of all the Cobalt owners who went there can you guess who acted the most mature and didn't do burnouts or try to race everyone?

Yup you guessed it right. Me, a 17 year old kid.
Good for you. With speed comes responsibility and too many dick head **** bag teenagers don't get that these days. Every freaking time I drive my Cobalt some douchebag kid with spiky hair tries to race me. Surprisingly they don't bother when I'm in my other car. For most kids when they get in something quick all sense goes out the window, especially when provoked which are all kids are good for. I was young once, I know how it is. You have the best intentions of being a law biding citizen and then one of your buddies it talking crap at school and the next thing you know you are out racing some where.

I think a 16 year old kid getting a Cobalt SS supercharger or turbo is a horrible idea and boarderline irresponsible parenting. With that said to the OP you do realize for the 18k you have to spend you can get a C5 Z06 Vette. I mean if you are going to kill yourself you might as well go all out.

like everyone says.. learn the car and don't kill yourself. I honestly at 16 probably would've done way stupid stuff.

and where the hell do you guys find subaru's for 18k.. maybe normal ones. Last time I looked STI's were going for 20k 2004's at that.

I wanted the AWD, but eh I'll make do.. with FWD my Prix GTP was a blast, and launching the SS is easier in my opinion. I'm enjoying the turbo it's a blast! and I still got a supercharged car sittinig over winter so I kinda got a taste of both, yet the SC car is insanely wicked course the cars only 2700 lbs.

good luck and drive safe.
