How do I pull up the P number thingy when my check engine light comes on? Thanks

with a obd2 code reader. can get it free at autozone. or you can buy a pretty good one for around 100 or so.

 

I thought there was a way to display them on the dash? sorry I am new to the cobalt! I know my srt-4 just showed the p code. I thought my vette flashed the code too on the display thingy where it said corvette when I started it. Thanks
