Question Ricer Exhaust vs. Non-Ricer Exhaust for the Cobalt

The complete story:
I am starting this thread because I thought I had finally decided on what exhaust I was going to get, a Megan Racing Catback Exhaust. A friend whose opinion I regard highly, said that exhaust was a ricer exhaust.

A member (sick06cobalt) on this forum posted up this video:
http://s157.photobucket.com/albums/t...t=100_5438.flv

This got me thinking, what constitutes a ricer exhaust? What are the defining characteristics that would cause someone to decide whether an exhaust was "ricer-ish"?

I was generally looking for a deep low tone, with a roar like pop at the higher rpms. You guys who have been next to a 5.0 Stang or Vette with a good exhaust know what I am talking about; that rumbling sound.

The Short Version:
What is a ricer exhaust?

Videos and Sound Clips are encouraged for reference!

So far in the thread.

Characteristics of Rice:

2. High Pitched

Characteristics of "American" style:
1. Low
2. Loud

"American" Style Suggestions in no particular order:
1. DC Sports
2. Ark N2
3. Stock w/ header and d/p
4. Magnaflow

I made a poll about the Megan Racing Exhaust:

i would say that an exhaust that sounds raspy and high pitched and has a huge outlet would be considered "rice".

i wouldnt say the large exit on it would make it rice.. i think 4inch tips looks good on the ss/sc cuz it fills the gap in the rear lip. thats just my opinion though..

personally i dont think the megan exhaust is "ricey"

but i respect your friends opinion because i dont want to say he's wrong because he isnt.

there a lot of good companies out there like magnaflow..i believe one guy above me said he had the dc sports..another with the ark n2..all good..you should listen to sound clips and just decide what tone you like best!

I didn't think it did either, so I am pooling some CSS.net opinions!

Do you think that maybe most ricer exhausts look a certain way? Cause I kinda see where the idea that if it looks a certain way it might be ricerish is going.

The Megan Racing exhaust says it is drift spec, etc. large opening, and they also say it is angled out and up, although not on the Cobalt muffle though.

But I would agree, for the most part, it would appear that looks don't affect the sound.

alright well, this would strght suck on a 2.2. ur going to go from a larger DP to a smaller 2" pipe bck to a large exit muffler. u want to have the same size piping all the way around. and why would u even want to keep ANY of the stock piping . 2.2, 2.4 or even 2.0?

i would say that the dual dtm tips ( the ones that turn up) and such is the ones that look ricey.. and angled tip isnt ricey though. i perfer the look of an angled tip to one that is straight cut. most would agree though that any kinda tip that turns upward is ricey as hell. a dual exit isnt that bad but they dont really fit the cobalts to well cuz none of the balt rear bumpers are straight. they all have some kinda cut out for the tip or the exhaust. but looks dont affect the sound of the muffler. you just wanna stay away from the raspy high pitched sounds and you'll be ok.

i'll second that.... the only way to use the factory balt exhaust size is to put the ss/sc exhaust on the 2.2 for more flow since its bigger.. but i say if your gonna spend money on it then just buy a full aftermarket exhaust an be done with it..

tru, i can understand that but no one really looks at the underside of your car. prob cheaper just to buy a cat-bak then to do anything custom. there is also an issue of how the exhaust flows. you are going to have a tremendous amount of turbulence with a set up like that.

not all aftermaket catbacks are loud.. with the size and way the factory catback is built its really restrictive and not worth spend all that money on buyin header and down pipe just to leave the stock catback on..

you only get as much flow as the smallest most restrictive pipe on the car so the header and down pipe would just be a waste with stock catback.

im usin the same setup as my buddies.... he dynod 765awhp but he used 5.5in all the way to under the car and thats.. all hes open dp.... i ran a 4.5 dp to 3 in catback on my old setup....

n u have to remember a boosted car runnin 35psi doesnt really need that much back pressure...
