How to paint fuel rail cover and spark plug cover (56k=DEATH)

Ok so i was bored on my day off and decided to do some painting. You will need, brake cleaner, 1 inch blue masking tape, 1/4 inch green masking tape, Razor blade, red 3-m scuff pad, self etching primer, your choice of paint color, and clearcoat.

Step 1:

using the blue tape run a line over the ecotec badge twice(always good to double wrap). cut out along the badge and you will have a nice clean edge.

Using the 1/4 inch green tape, cover up the raised part of your spark plug cover, u will need to use it 2 times across to cover it, trim a straight line if needed

Here is your finished masked off and cut pieces

did the bowtie with the green too, it sucked, lots of small pieces.

Step 2:

Take your 3-M scuff pad and scuff all of the surfaces. Wipe clean with a dry towel, wet towels will ruin your masking job.

Step 3:

Prime with the self etching primer. ONLY 2 coats, any more and it loses its purpose of making a good sticky contact area. Wait 15 minutes before painting.

Step 4:

Paint with your paint of choice. I went to the local autobody supply shop and had em mix up some laser blue, it was dead on. Take your time and spray about 4-5 coats, waiting 5 minutes between coats.

Step 5:

AFTER waiting 15 minutes start clear coating. if you have never clear coated before it is important that you do not put to much on at once. Dont expect it to shine with 1 coat. Coat about 4-5 times waiting 5 minutes between coats.

Step 6:

After drying for about 1 hour carefully remove your tape. It helps if u run a razor along the edge of the tape and paint where they meet, it will prevent it from lifting up.

Heres the finished product

note>>> non-high heat paint has the tendancy to crack at the temperatures our cars run at.

Great write up all-in-all tho. I'm gonna do the same in due time tho.

wow back from the dead. I got the paint at a local auto body store. They got my color code and custom mixed it into a spray bomb. All you have to do is go to a local auto body store and thet should be able to mix it.

Dupicolor has all GM colors in spray cans. Any local parts shop should have them.

it is used for fine lines. You most likely only gonna find it at an auto body supply shop

Hey did you paint your valve cover, and how easy was it if you did?

Also do you have pics?

i was thinking about buying a valve cover from someone... so in case I didn't like it I could still keep the one I have, but as far as difficulty goes for painting it... pretty easy?
