Yes Steve but it will be easier to take the whole thing off when using the heat gun.

 

How would you go about reattaching the rear one back on? Same double sided foam tape used to reattach the bowtie to the chrome?

for you guys that are having trouble with "bubbling" or "frying" make sure your surface is cleaned with wax or greese remover or thinner! prob have wax on your bowties so it fry's up! and apply thin light coats at first had the same problem when i painted the interior in my cavy!!.. and then i took the auto collision course and learned what was wrong with it lol

Painted my bowtie black this week, and it looks great! I ended up sanding it w/400 grit and painting it with duplicolor black and then hit it with the duplicolor clear coat twice. After it dries for 48 hours I hit it with a light compound + wax to really make it pop.

I also tend to be kinda OCD, but the thing looks flawless and I'm really glad I did it! Wish I did it sooner actually, that gold is lame on a red car.

Thanks for the tips earlier on removing the bowtie from the chrome base.

 

gimpster, can explain how you hit it with the compound and wax and what did u actually use...i'm gonna be doing this tomorrow and i wanted to do the same thing as you...but my ss t/c is black

 

I use a product called Menzerna Intense Polish for my "compound", then their Final Polish to get the haze back out and finally their FMJ as my sealant/wax. Its not stuff you find in stores, and pretty pricey for just a bow-tie job!

Just get some of the medium Meguires compound from an auto parts store and then wax it like normal. The compound is just to get the orange peel out of the rattle can clear coat job. Do that, and your bowtie will be like a mirror! Make sure you let the clear coat dry at least 48-72 hours though, or you'll just rub it right off.

I done my the day after getting the car. I may add a few more coats of clear before being super happy.

 

what do u think would be a good color if my car is black?? i want it to stick out. i was thinking about getting chrome tape for it but i dont want to be all ghetto n have tape on the car

 

Any color is going to stand out against black. try and think about where you would like to go with the rest of the car color wise.

If you like chrome... get chrome paint.

 

what kind of paint actully comes out chrome because all of the paints ive tried in the past on other projects do not come out to a shiny chrome but more of a moderate silver.... maybe white if i paint all the mesh white and the rims

 

I would go white/red/yellow.

 

i just did mine, i wish i was a lil more patient between coats. if i can get my hands on another bowtie i think i would try a lil more time between paint and clear... looks good though it will pass

 

Patience is key... I rolled around w/no bowtie for like 2wks heh.

 

do u guys think a hair dryer would work to get the gold bowtie off the chrome base?

 

and a razor yah but when ever i take adhesive off i get adhesive remover ( a little bottle is like $5 at home depot or lowes or sumthing like that and then for the rest of ur projects you dont gota worry about taking glue appart) anything citrus based also should do the job

 

i'm working on mine right now...i'm really happy with it but i got like 2 little sections of divots in the paint...really hard to see though...i'm hoping the clear coat will lay in and take it out...other then that it looks amazing like it comes stock black...i'll post pics when i'm done

if the divots dont come out i may sand them out a little then repaint it...?

 

I kept my chrome base on it. I know when i did mine I got quite a bit of black on my chrome base but it didn't stick wheel so I just had to rub my finger nail across and it came right up. So if u wanted to you could just spray the entire thing and rub the paint off the chrome since the paint doesn't stick to good on that chrome base.

Yea but its a pain in the A$$ to get it masked out right. Either take it off with a hair dryer or paint the entire thing lol.
