Newbie Here From Michigan

Just bought my first Cobalt SS it's a 07 it's got a rattling timing chain so I haven't ran it yet. Was my sons car so I've seen it run and drove it in the past. Was still running but noisy when he come home from work 3 years ago and shut it off.. never been run since so hoping the thing didn't jump time etc.. I bought a Cloyes timing set from ZZP and just starting the process of taking it apart. May have questions about it soon hence joining this page here. I'll upload a photo but it's a old photo from the dealership when my son bought it. He only drove it about 3 months before the timing issue happen. Was always quiet ( no chain noise on cold starts etc. so thinking a guide or tensioner broke.

Welcome, noisy as in chain noise?

Did you get the kit with new gears as well?

Also, did you get a replacement timing chain tensioner assembly? (the one in the head, looks like a massive bolt)

Yes, I could hear the chain dragging / slapping around inside the cover / head area. I didn't get the kit with the gears as zzp says they haven't seen worn gears and that they have seen issues with aftermarket gears. I'll see what they look like once I get into it though, if they look worn I'll buy GM gears. I didn't get the tensioner assembly yet but after reading some today I'm going to get one. I still have other things to buy like the gaskets etc. and thinking while I have it apart maybe good time to change water pump? Can't remember exactly but the car has around 150,000 miles on it.

Thanks for commenting and any advice you might have while I have it apart etc. I personally wanted to get the OEM GM kit but back when I bought the kit everyone was sold out so I got the Cloyes one.. photo showed it came with gears.. but the one zzp video they said they don't include the gears and recommend GM gears since they've seen a lot of problems with aftermarket gears, so I figured I'd wait until I get into it before ordering anything more just so I'm not buying stuff that I don't need.

I would replace the water pump while there, just get a take-off from ZZP.

It might also be worth replacing the front cover/oil pump with the mileage the car has.
