Local NJ HPT Help Needed

so i've helped more than my fair share of local members out, and now it's me asking the favor. I need to shut off my p0140 so I can pass inspection. Anyone local that can help out?

I'm pretty sure I can turn it off for you... I dont use HPT but I have a trifecta tuning software and there is a "reset CEL" function...

I don't need to reset the cel, I have a scanner for that. I need to actually turn the code off. Not sure if you can do that, I don't know much about the trifecta stuff to be honest.

I have all 06's(and 08's, not that it matters ) unlocked, so I would unfortunately need the credits to license your PCM.

Pretty sure it's 100 bucks.

Didn't you have someone tune you?

p0140...is one of those codes that will make your car freak out and go insanely rich at idle.

Have you done any hard checks, like making sure the o2 sensor is plugged in?

the front 02 sensor is the one that handles the fuel delivery. The rear 02 sensor does nothing more than tell you if your cat is functioning properly. You can disconect 02 sensor completely, and it won't affect anything other than give a cel. If the front 02 sensor starts acting up, that's where you'll have a fuel issue.

If you can clear other codes, it may be worth the 100 and drive down for me honestly. I need a new rear 02 sensor to pass inspection, which will cost 100 lol. So i'd rather get you the credit and not worry about the install. It's weird, i've worked on so many other people's cobalts I really have no desire o work on mine anymore.

One of the wires on the sensor is broken, which is giving other codes as well. Can you turn off any codes with htp? And also if we were to disable the code, would that let the im monitors set to ready? Or will they read not ready.

Sted, how much would you want to flash a car to say stock/stage 2? I'm 2006, wouldn't mind giving you a few bucks for the trouble.

What about just coming along for a ride and scanning the car for knock, no adjusting?

Wrong. Even if turn off the codes, then go taking off the rear o2 sensor it causes mayhem and fueling at idle issues.

Not that I have ever had it happen to me(obviously) but search around, Area talks about it.

I haven't noticed any problems, but don't have a log, and mine's been broken for a good year. My guess is if there is fueling issues, it has something to do other than the code. A quick search on how 02 sensors work will show that the rear has zero to do with fuel. The rear 02 was added back in I think 96 when they added the obd2's as a way to make sure the cat is functioning properly for emissions purposes. There's very, very few cars on the market where the sensor after the cat has anythign to do with fuel. Here's a link http://www.obd-codes.com/p0140 I think this is one of the many cases where someone incorrectly said something, and everyone else started saying it so people started believing it. The vast majority of people totally mis-diagnose this code. The code is "efficiency below threshold". That doesn't mean the air coming through is more than it should be, like most people think when they chalk it up to their aftermarket cat. It's the efficiency of the sensor that's low, not the cat.

at any rate, will it let the monitors read ready if we shut off the codes? If so i'll come down.

You're correct for the most part. The only issue is the PCM likes to run a sanity check to see if the rear O2 is responding properly. Changing the code (turned off) doesn't stop the sanity check from running, just from reporting an emissions failure. I personally haven't had any issues on 05s. The problem really rears its head on 07s fairly consistently.

Thanks for clarifying that.

Sometimes retained info doesn't quite make it back out

Kev, you come down here and I will turn it off for the cost of credits, but I suggest you ask around maybe to see if someone already has it unlocked before you go spending monies.

Maybe try the HPTuner forums

new 02 sensor fixed the problem, so no help needed. Have to say i'm a lil disapointed after the dozens of free installs and all the help i've given to members and never asked for anything that not one person besides steddy offered any kind of help.
