Asking the NW guys

Hey guys,

Ron here from Portland. Sorry I've missed all the events thus far.

Couple of questions.

At 25K my Pirellis are done. I actually think the stockers are excellent handling. They even hang corners well in the wet nearly bald. Horrible from a stop, and hydroplane like a bitch. And gee, it hardly ever rains in Oregon.
But way too expensive to replace with the same.
So I just bought 225/45/18 Bridgestone Pontenza 03 pole positions from Tire Rack @ $115 per tire. Close out deal. Friends who autocross like em a lot. And at $500 shipped, couldn't pass em up. A bit big for the rim, but nearly the same OD as the stockers, but wider. I'll change rims if need be, but I think they will be ok.

Time to lower the car.
I'd like 1.5" lower, but want to maintain the same ride quality as stock...or very close. I'm not a kid anymore.
Suggestions? I know there are a lot of choices now, but just haven't followed, and in reality, there is just too much fluff and mis information on the regular site here. Spring discussions turn into decal discussions etc. You know what I mean.

Also time to add an Ingles damper? Gads, the wheel hop is horrible. Advice?

Also time to replace the stock muff. I'll replace the rear 2.25" section with mandrel tubing....I can weld and fabricate. Thinking of a Magnaflow muff. Any suggestions? I use the Magnaflows on my Nova and like them a lot. But it aint no daily driver. I might use the stock tip......or gads, might rice it up just to be funny. As long as it sounds good....mellow, noticable, but not too loud! The stock setup is so quiet I can't hear it at all.

I have stage 2 and love it. They should have sold em this way. Not at all sure an intake would make any diff. Anyone know better? For sure?

And the GM extrudehoned exh manifold makes sense. Headers that mate to the stock downpipe don't. So ideas here appreciated as well.

Drag race season is around the corner. And it's time to get moving on the Nova. I hear Pinks All Out is coming to Woodburn July 4,5. Could be a blast.

Our Headsupnw.com program is also getting going. So if you all want to see some good heads up....very fast cars....check out the web site and come watch or play.......it's fun stuff.

Thanks,

Ron

PS....Tom.....what's up with the turbo? You old fart......

Hey hows it going?

Ok, so to start off. You will be amazed how much different your car will feel with just the new treads!

The ingals torque damper will help reduce wheel hop. Poly mounts will do even better, but the trade off is cabin vibes. This may not be worth it since you are still looking for comfort.

As for lowering springs you can get the Eibach Pro Kit, it doesn't lower it as much, but the ride will stay closer to the stock feel.

A Cold Air Intake will help a little, but your stock exhaust is horribly restrictive. I would personally go for a complete aftermarket setup. Header, down pipe and cat back all 2.5" mandrel bent. Or if you are wanting to fab it yourself you could just pick up a good header and do the rest yourself.

Tony has a torque dampener for sale. He has a thread here in the NW section. That will help out with the wheel hop. I got a K&N intake, not sure of the gains, but it sure sounds alot different. The whine is way louder. As far a springs, I've got the Sportlines and love them. The prokit are the same spring rate but aren't as low. I like my set up. it suits me. I hope you get yours the way you like it!

Hey and welcome!

As far as the ingalls goes I wouldn't waste your money. I had one on for a while, but really didn't help out that much. Replaced it with the solid mount from TTR and makes a world of a different. Cost is just a tad more and well worth it in my opinion. You will get more vibes, but I think the tradeoff is worth it.

I have the Eibach sportlines on my ride and they are real nice. Stance looks great and the ride isn't much stiffer than stock, but it feels a lot better.

Hope to see ya around sometime!

Thanks.
I know about poly mounts, and agree that would be best. But I don't want to feel the engine as you surmised. Too bad Ingals doesn't make 2 dampers, one for the side and one for the front mount.
Looking forward to the new tires! I liked the Pirellis, but just way too much money. And I wanted something a bit wider.
I'll check out the Eibachs....but I know there are many more to choose from.
As for the exhaust, the stock system is 2.5", mandrel bent and only gets ugly back at the muffler. So thats where I want to improve it. I do exh work all the time, so I better get some tubing and get busy.

Hey, it's still the good old days right? I'm 52 and haven't grown up yet.
Got a photo of the new tires and wheels? They are supposed to arrive today, but it's Presidents day....
Did you race at Woodburn?

Hey, thanks for the response.
I have looked at the Ingalls solution. One thing bothers me, it limits movement at one end of the engine only. There are 3 mounts.
What we call wheel hop ir really engine flop. The factory mounts are sponge rubber. The factorys goal was to reduce NVH.....noise, vibration and harshness. Which they did. But gads, get the tires spinning and grabbing and it's voilent. I believe the LSD only makes it worse. I broke my trans during a violent episode of this.
I just might get the Ingalls, and figure out my own way to limit travel at the other 2 mounts.

On the springs, I assume you kept the stock shocks/struts? How much do the sport lines lower? I can deal with a bit stiffer ride.....but don't want it bouncing around like a you know what.......
And I gather you have to be carefull pulling up to parking lot stops......or risk breaking the nose off the car.

BTW....anyone want to swap the SS Arrival Blue wing for the shorter one? I'm tired of the blind spots......and like the stealth look better.

Ron

Yeah I kept the stock struts/shocks all around. It lowers it I think 1.5"/1.0" if I remember right. Here is a before and after. (with a few other afters )

Aw shoot....I should have bought a red one!
Looks great, thanks. That's what I'm looking for.

Just got the tires installed. The 225's look great on the car. Even with the stock rims. Les Schwab.....took 2 hours...they are always busy. But for $600 total, and a good know perf tire, I'm happy.
A 1" drop will be perfect.
Now on to the springs!

Yeah I'm a little old to be a hommie too but I'll take the complement.
Yep, did some racing at Woodburn from mid '70 to early '80's .
And you are right, just because we are older doesn't mean we're grown up!
I'm 55 and you are only young once but you can be immature forever !!

I'm also looking for springs that are close to stock ride and that will not wear stock struts/shocks out as well? Free bump for you Ron lol
