They tried to compete yes, but couldn't. You agree for graphic rendering you need a combination of good CPU and GPU correct.

further more .. I work at an animation studio that does motion graphics and 3d animation as well as after effects work.. a mac system is actually cheaper then a comparable cuda system.. not to mention. 3d max doesnt, maya and stuff dont have native renders (mental ray) that support cuda systems so you have to get an aftermarket renderer (which alot of cuda enabled renderers arent very developed)
video/ audio edit programs are light years better on macs.. they're just not made for pcs..
a mac system is actually cheaper then a comparable cuda system.. not to mention. 3d max doesnt, maya and stuff dont have native renders (mental ray) that support cuda systems so you have to get an aftermarket renderer (which alot of cuda enabled renderers arent very developed)
3d was brought up because thats really the only thing on pcs that uses cuda.. and even so it's not fully integrated..
What about adobe suite? It uses the crap out of cuda? How about the audio and video encoding programs that use gpgpu ? How about the amazing key cracking software that breaks wireless keys?
.. its not NATIVE for the adobe suites until cs5(from what i understand).. not to mention it's been working with floating point gpu processing on macs since cs3 and that doesnt excuse the fact that the best video editing and encoding programs as well as audio are still mac only ..

you do realize what you're saying right ? how much is a cuda card/ proprietary setup as well as the extra plugins you need to run cuda with said programs a cuda system STARTS at like 4600 bux the card itself is 1200 for the BASE model card. I'm by no means a mac fanboi.. frankly i hate them.. but i'm being honest with myself when i say .. sorry video editing/ audio editing and PS runs better on a mac ( maybe not when cs 5 comes out but thats to be determined) every mac desktop has floating 64 bit gpu processors ( that have a video board)

I know what systems your company buys. Look at soft modded consumer cards before prof grade cards. CUDA and stream processing is available in cards as low as the $50 range all the way up to the top of the line. I think you are confusing professional grade GPUs with consumer grade. Guess what the difference is? Drivers. CUDA is available in almost all new cards from NVIDIA.
CUDA and stream support started in CS4. You throw in SLI/Crossfire support and consumer grade systems compete with your $4500 prof grade system. Get into the 6 core AMD processors and there are instances where the MAC systems look more foolish than ever.
Try getting a 6 core processor on a MAC for $300
Hell go to the Apple store and price 12GB of memory. It's $1300 or you can go to newegg and get 12GB for $360 for a PC system.. Tell me it's better. Doesn't matter if the MAC has ECC memory or whatever doesn't make up for the 1k dollars.

NO mac , or pc will touch one of those computers .. you're sorely mistaken if you think they can

haha i mean i'm not mint on all this stuff.. but i do photoshop, aftereffects soundbooth and stuff at my job.. my computer that i'm on now ( my home computer) doesn't have a "cuda enabled card" but my work comp has a cuda enabled workstation card.. that comp has a quad core processor.. my home has a dual core, I have 4 gb on windows 7 work has 3gb on win xp . my the definition of his since my work comp is cuda enabled it should work alot better.. frankly it doesn't my home comp works as good as that comp.. because i have an extra gig of ram ( i'm sure windows 7 helps) but it's nothing like a 4500+ dollar tesla cuda system.. if you're going normal pc to normal pc.. a mack will win on that front lol they've had 64bit floating point gpu's for a long time i assue you it was implemented on the mainstream user for macs first..
also it's a pretty standard fact that macs perform better on those things lol mostly because on video/ sound editing they possess the best programs in the business lol

OK...even if it is meant to compete with those products (which, IMO, it's not). Would you spend more than double the price of a Kindle or Nook on an iPad? It's meant to compete with tablet PC's more than anything. Is it better than a Kindle or a Nook? Yes. Is it even half as good as a tablet PC? Not even close.
