The ultimate appearance mod update
3 grand for a complete? that's it? I work at a collision and restoration shop as a painter and the cheapest ive ever done a complete was around 6g's paint and materials is about $1500.00 depending on what they use
Hmmm... never looked into Sikkens paint before so I will take your word on it....
As for the cost, I am getting a bit of a deal on it. I have heard that 4-5K is usual for a customized job. This shop specializes in collision work, so I trust the guy. It isn't going to be a Maaco special...
I an also taking some special precautions to help protect against future chips and dents. I will be getting chip guard put on the lower rocker panels and they are going to add a flex additive to the clear coat to flex the entire car.
If you think this car is babied, then you would be correct. Its current mileage sits at 6815 and it is completely garage kept. A couple of chips I might be able to overlook initially, but eventually they will be taken care of.
Yep, I am a car nut....

The paint job is awesome, the guy is highly regarded as the better of most, he's painting my bike, flat black and custom logos. Top notch setup, and for the tails, I like em, these kids I see are still dumb with their remarks, when they have no respect for probably the fastest cobalt in utah, possibly the rocky mountain region. Anyways, I'm excited to see the final turnout nak, we gotta be there to see it! I know ill love it when my bike gets finished!
Update
Well after a week with no progress, this week I showed up to find that the paint choices were ready and the initial dent repair was done...
However, before I begin I will share a nice surprise I found when I arrived... apparently Nick's previous work showed up to get a few rock chips looked at:

Keep in mind that this paint job is over 6 months old...
Nick put Coby in the front window:

Here is his hood... completely fixed:

Now onto paint... We decided to go with a pearl effect over the top of the SRTM. This is what it looks like with 2 coats of pearl on top:

Here is a spray out panel with the SRTM and 2,4,&6 coats of pearl (from right to left):

So then I tried to get a close up of the metal flake in the pearl:

Next, we did a spray out of the SRTM, only we removed the maroon/burgundy/purple hue from the paint to see what the pearl would look like with a different base coat. Then we did 2 and 6 coats of pearl (6 on the right and 2 on the left):

And this is the final color... We took the previous basecoat and darkened it then did 6 coat pearl on top:

Keep in mind that there are some shadows and slight off-coloring in the pics, but this should give an idea of the final paint color. I am going to do the entire car in this, minus the door jambs and engine bay...
Next week, Nick is going to do some spray outs and ghost effects with the SS so that I can determine whether or not we add it to the car (in place of the current SS badges)... More to come so stay tuned....

Well this week there wasn't much to show on the car - it is still in pieces. Instead, we looked at ghosting emblems as I will be completely debadging the car. Once again, I will do my best to describe this although my pictures will not do the work justice....
So, to begin with Nick showed me a panel of effects and emblems. What you are seeing here are a variety of ghosting effects with both the classic and modern ss emblems:

Immediately I zero'd in on the effect in the upper corner. This particular effects is a white with candy overlay. The candy color had to be hand created as it is not available commercially. What you end up with is an effect that 'glows'. I tried to get the effect from a couple of different angles with little success:

So what I will end up with is several different size ss emblems on each door and the center of the trunk in the factory ss design with the 'glow' effect. Nick has some ideas on possibly using the glow elsewhere on the car and I told him to have fun.... so at this point I really do not know what I will end up with. It will be awesome though....

Dude I had my respect for this car before it got the tails. It was simple, clean and was one of the best cobalts on this website til u had to do other stuff. W.e. not gonna hate on you tho,we all have our taste!
Eh, to each their own....
It is hard to get a good picture of what the paint will be... you turn it one way and the camera only picks up the pearl, not really the base coat. You turn it the other way and you can't really see the pearl - only the base coat. I have a feeling that my final pics of the car will be the same way. I am actually not sure what the final product will be. When I told Nick to 'have fun' with the glow effect he got this sort of glazed look in his eyes.... Not that I mind - after all I have seen his work and it is only fair since his shop is 'sponsoring' part of the paint job... Yep, this car will never see the track after this. It will be a garage-kept show car/display car...
I have a feeling that if you are not po'd about the tails, then you are probably po'd about the last statement....
And leave the tails alone dammit! (lol)

I would like to think that I am doing my part to stimulate the economy....
I will be checking in on the progress tomorrow so you guys will have to be patient until then... Since the car is about an hour drive away and with my work schedule, I can only check on it once a week (Fridays)... Unfortunately I may miss a lot of the progression since the next few steps only take a few days each...

Weekly update
Ok here is your weekly dose (week 6)....

Today they are finishing up all the sanding in the cracks and crevices. Tomorrow they will lay out the base coat.... After that I am not sure what will be going on....
Nick hopes to have almost everything done by Friday so the next update you get may be the final product (minus some additional buffing). He also said that he will try to get some pics as they are working so you guys don't miss out on all the action...
