2005colbalt ls sedan problems with auto transmission

i never drove a 4 speed auto before but something seems strange about the way this car shifts sometimes it shifts smooth and other times the rpms rise

Well if you're accelerating, the RPM will rise and then drop because it's switching to a higher gear. If you are just cruising and hit the gas pedal with enough/increasing pressure, it will switch to a lower gear which will make your RPM rise.

That seems to easy an explanation, are you referring to something else?

Thanks. I want to know when I'm driving down the highway at 60 mph, is it normal for the rpms to be at 2500 to 3000? Isn't it supposed to go down to 1500 or so when it gets into overdrive?

I never really paid attention, but at 65-70mph, 2,500RPM seems okay to me, 3,000 is a bit high I believe. Maybe someone else can comment on this?

its about where u said it is. doesnt really drop that low on the RPM's at that speed. last time i had it that low was when i drove my dodge ram wit a v8

that's about right at that speed. my car which, granted, is 5-spd is about 3k at 74ish

Slightly off topic, but my Pontiac had the 6-cyl and had the widest auto I've ever driven...o/d didn't hit 2k rpm until 74 mph.
