2ed gear grind.
2ed gear grind.
As the title says, I get a short grind from 1st to 2ed and from 3rd to 2ed.. I'm guessing it's a snychronizer. Anyone here have that replaced? Wondering how much $ I'm going to be looking at for a fix.
Well depends on what trans you have, Still under warranty? try a transmission fluid change to see if it helps? most of the time if you have a bad gear it's cheaper to replace the entire transmission as the f35 in the SS/SC and Tc are hard to work on and FWIW most dealer's dont break them down or even have all the tools to take it all apart. You could try the certified used option!
Not under warrenty, no. Its an 06 sc. I'll give it a fluid change, but that doesn't appear to be the problem judging by the sound haha. Would you happen to the ball park price of a transmission?
Do you have G85? New is around 1k maybe alittle cheaper for G85 trans(lsd). If your non G85 and just want a used one they can be had for around 500 or so shipped. Check the F/S threads or ebay!
well if you were to bring it to a shop labor would be around 12 hours and parts would probably run in the 200 dollar range depending on what parts you need. I've rebuilt a couple at work....it's not bad as long as you have a good press. The gears on these trannys are pressed on very tight....and just have to be careful not to damage the gears.
ANd how much per hr your shop charge? even at 50 an hour it's around 6-800 and i doubt your shop charged that little for labor, At 100$ an hour he's better off finding a new G85 trans shipped!
It's a non G85. And 500 bucks isn't tooooo bad for used. Hopefully I can find one that wasnt abused beyond belief. I'll ask around down around here and see if there's any floating around.. Probably not but worth a try anyways. If not I'll scan through here and see what I can get. Thanks! Looks like I'll be driving the sunfire around for the time being... Powerrrr
Yea, but even if he does purchase a used transmission he will still have to pay a shop labor to replace the transmission which is around 8 hours book time.......so unless he is going to replace it himself he won't really be saving much money since what he will be saving in labor he will be paying for the trans.
Well then he's got some thinking/saving to do! Lowest cost possible is used trans and swap them him self, Which would only take a day maybe 2 if he is not so mechanically inclined and maybe a busted knuckle or two. Personally i would not want to pay a shop to do it unless they have done quite a few as the Chevy dealer's dont rebuild them and that's for a reason! Not only hard to do but not as cost effective as replacement, seen horror stories of had a single gear grind, Got estimate for tear down and rebuild only to have the dealer replace it entirely and he is out his car for awhile cause reassembly was next to impossible!
well I work at a chevy dealership....and we do rebuild them. Depending on the cost of what is wrong. If a warranty transmission comes in we need to do a cost analysis of repair vs. replace. And believe me, if the only thing wrong with the trans is a $90.00 syncro.....there is no way they would authorize a replacement unit. But that's besides the point lol
I'm in the hunt around here for one. Hopefully I can find one I got a local mechanic calling around. Me and a couple of my buddies are going to change it ourselves to save $. But I sure do feel like an idiot when I'm driving around in a busy spot either jumping from 1st to 3rd or getting a nice, lovely grind for second gear. Makes me feel like a boss.
