Catastrophic Supercharger Failure

As mentioned previously, I have been dealing with weird noises and low boost coming from my SS S/C, in addition to a rough idle, for probably over 2 years now. Today the supercharger completely failed. The pulley sheared off from the hub with the screws still attached. I was driving and heard a loud clanking sound. Then all of a sudden there wasn't any boost. The battery light also came on. The pulley was lying in the corner of the engine bay and the belt obviously wasn't spinning. Ended up limping the thing about 8 miles (in the dark) to get home.

So for those of you with superchargers making strange noises or if you're having low boost issues - fix it now before the heaton self destructs like mine did.

By chance do you have a video of the sound your Cobalt was making before it self-destructed? This could be a great tool for people to use.

Nope. It just felt really sluggish and it would always hesitate under 4000rpm or so. It made a bunch of hissing/grinding noises when you pressed the gas. Right before it failed, when I started it up, it made the worst rattling sound I've ever heard. Then it kept squeaking and rattling until finally the whole thing destroyed itself.

Sucks, these things aren't cheap either. Only had a 3" pulley on it as well.

What's strange is that the hub is still attached to the snout, and I can spin it by hand. The only problem is that it's about 2" away from where it's supposed to be.

Junk.

Damn, that really sucks. New Eaton's are like 600 bucks, and a used one probably goes for about half that. Do you think you could salvage some of the parts in the supercharger and kind of "make your own" by combining other salvage parts?

Cheapest I found new was 799 on ZZP website. I might be able to rebuild it, but I won't know what went wrong until I take it apart and see what failed.

As low as $200 on this site, just keep your eyes peeled. Check RL forums as well.

Sounds like it broke the drive shaft off inside. Interested to see what the rotors looked like. Be sure you get any pieces of metal out of the intake manifold, or you will ruin the replacement blower very quickly.

Glad I don't have a supercharger to worry about failing.

I'll disassemble it tomorrow and post the carnage. The rotors were scuffed when I removed the blower at like 35-40k. The fact that it lasted another 46k is pretty amazing now that I think of it, lol.

Why did you wait so long to check what was wrong with it man?

If my car ever makes even the slightest weird noise, I search for the issue before I drive her again.

Always thought the hissing was some sort of small exhaust leak. It only happened under boost.

Oh well. New blower ftw!

I get ya. At least nothing else happened.

You need to take some photos of the carnage.

I can't figure out what the hell happened. The rotors turn freely with the hub, and those scuffs that are on the rotors were there 40k ago. There's no play in the shaft either! Everything looks the same as it did 40k ago except for the pulley that somehow sheared off from the hub.

Can you guys spot anything odd?

Did you have the pulley bolts torqued to spec? (16 ft-lbs)

Also, was the pulley hub installed flush and straight??

::Edit:: Pictures were not showing when I first commented.

What pulley sytem is that?? Smoothflow or ZZP? The hub looks like it was installed backwards, or the snout shaft is f'd.

Those marks in the rotor coating are an indicator of rotor to rotor contact for sure.

your belt was probably over tightened by ALOT, that would cause the bearings to fail in the snout, but ive never heard of one sheering off the hub before

Smoothflow.

If it was installed backwards that would explain the carnage.

Belt's fine.
