yes! lol your timing chain tensioner is critical! if the chain goes slack while the engine is running, your pistons could meet your valves, and that would be bad!

make sure you tell them it happens intermittently when the car is hot or they won't be able to duplicate the condition, which is what's needed to diagnose and repair.

It is most definatley the timing chain tensioner. The dealer will rape you on a problem thats gonna occur all the time. I had mine replaced under warranty but I can't imagine what I would have paid out of my pocket. The same thing happened to mine where it only happens every once in a while but then it just happened all the time one day when I was hard on it then I got it replaced.

Loud Engine Tap - Going to the dealer tomorrow

Sounds like some put LEGOs in my engine. It's just like a valve tap. The faster you accelerate the faster and louder the noise is. I just got the car a few months ago (07 SS) with 30k on it. I see some people explain a rattle at idle. If I am next to a car, a wall, on in a shop the tap/knock is so loud that people tell me the car sounds like it's blowing up.
I know these engines have a slight tap and some noise normally but not like this.

I am taking it to the Turnersville auto mall on saturday and pulling it right in their drive in service center as I rev the engine. I know it will turn heads when they hear the loud tapping. If they tell me it's normal I will go test drive a new one and pull that in right behind mine and rev the motor. I wonder what they will say then.

I will probley start my own thread so keep an eye out......

Any one else get a little shuddering at idle sometimes? It's more like a very quick fast vibration and stops, really random. It's probley that injector issue that is common.

kenny, i'd say you probably have the timing chain tensioner issue too, and as for the shuddering, a good throttle body cleaning and new air filter ought to help.

i assume you checked the engine oil level.

i often wondered if going to a 10W30 would have helped alleviate the issue i had with the hot restarts.

I brang mine in and they said they couldn't hear anything and it hasn't really done it since ... the other day tho the car started sputtering and went down to 500 rpms at idle and almost stalled but then was fine after that ... I don't know what the hell is wrong with it lol

Is there a post on people hearing this gremlin because I here it too in my trunk. Just sitting at a light and sometimes here tapping on the trunk but no ones there.

Ticking comes from direct injection or if it just happens when it's cold then it will make this noise till oil gets up there. I would suggest using 0W-30 Mobil1

Sounds like piston slap. GM has a bad habit of making motors with piston slap. They say its normal. Very annoying tho.

Alright buddy heres the secret on the gremlin in your trunk. This would be your fuel pump and there are quite a few other threads that talk about this and even have pictures and diagrams of what the part on the fuel pump is and what it does.

"that sound is normal" i hate it but i have no idea what it is so it looks like i have to live with it..

Yes mine has this exact same ticking your talking about. But theres all kinds of different ticking noises that can come from this cars engine. The timing chain tensioner is very noticable and definately needs fixed. Theres also a rattle that comes from the supercharger which is normal but annoying as all hell and I don't think its really a good thing that it rattles like that but its normal. This ticking your talking about I think could be the lifters being dry and when it warms up for a minute or two it goes away because the oil preassure finally gets to them. This is a common thing with GM cars but I have only had it happen to my older GM cars with a lot of mileage on them not my SS/SC which only has 22,000 on it and its been doing it for a while now. So I figure if yours does it and mine does it then were fine. If my car goes to complete hell and it should be something normally on a 100,000 mile warranty I know just how to get it fixed since mine is an 06 and not the 100,000 mile warranty but should be since its the exact same car as the 07. I'm gonna tape lemons all over my car and just park it legally in front of the Chevy dealership and wait till the media comes. I've seen a guy with a cadillac do this and it took a week before the media came but as soon as they did GM got his car in and fixed it for him QUICK!!! I wouldn't do this if they hadn't upped the warranty on the same car so I got my car breaking warranty covered. DON'T TAKE MY IDEA ITS MINE AND I STOLE IT FAIR AND SQUARE! LOL!!! Just kidding we should all do this so they just go ahead and warranty the 05 and 06 cobalts the same as the new ones.

It sounds like I have someone tied up in my trunk and he randomly bangs to get out.. ya it is funny as **** because I was sitting in a parking lot talking to some girl and she heard it and asked what it was....

Well the service manager said they are going to rip the motor apart and fix the problem. He said it is def loud and is not normal. He also said there are a few TSB's in the system that they think might be the issue with the tapping. They are also replacing the intermediate shaft. I took this to them...

TSB #050232005 -- EI05093 - CLUNK NOISE IN STEERING SYSTEM AT SLOW SPEEDS WHILE TURNING AND/OR DRIVING OVER BUMPS. *TT (REPLACE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT). UPDATED 10/05/07. *NJ UPDATED 11/02/07 *NJ (NHTSA ID #10017497, SEPTEMBER 01 2007)

I am also having a problem sometimes when racing trying to shift into 3rd or 4th. It's like the shifter is hitting a brick wall. I found this and took it to them also. They said it was common and once they can duplicate it they would fix it.

TSB #070729001 -- MG3, M86 TRANSAXLE GRINDING/WHINING NOISE IN 3RD OR 4TH GEAR, EXCESSIVE ENGAGEMENT OR DISENGAGEMENT EFFORT WHILE SHIFTING INTO 3RD OR 4TH GEAR, WILL NOT SHIFT INTO EITHER 3RD OR 4TH GEAR. (REPLACE COMPLETE OUTPUT SHAFT ASSEMBLY). *KB (NHTSA ID #10021453, APRIL 01 2007)

I have a brand new Injen on it and the car only has 30k on it. Throttle body is clean. Its more like a studder or lack of fuel.

I also thought about going to 10w30 but the car calls for 5w and its still under warr so it's there problem. I think the dealer is starting to like me.lol

WOW just got the call from the dealer -

Lego/ Valva tap noise
- They are starting with replacing the supercharger.

Shudder while sitting still
- They replaced the Mass airflow sensor

Clunking and banging in the front end
- They replace the intermidate shaft
- Both lower control arms
- Both struts

They said after they get the supercharger on they will see if there are any other noises.......

The funny thing is I just got this car a few months ago with 30k and I only have 31k on it now
These cars are worse than there little brother tha cavailer with how fast parts go bad. I had one of those too....lol

I figured it out you guys need to check this asap!!!! It was my tensioner!!!!! the timing chain had an inch of travel between the two cam sprockets!!!!!! I rounded off the sprocket teeth, it's at the dealer.... We'll see if they'll cover it

I picked my car up last night. Here is what is on the work order. The tapping is pritty much gone and the supercharger is very quiet now.

R&R valve cover to inspect - found metal in the valve train galley and oil filter.
Super charger is noisy - replaced
compression test - 165 psi X 4 cyl
oil pressure 30 psi
Mass Air Flow Sensor (code P0102) light was not on - replaced
Oil changed 2 times
upgraded PCM to newest update
Both Lower Control Arms (ripped) - replaced
Both Front Struts (leaking) - replaced
Both Stabilizer Links (play) - replaced

STS2/SS - Did your dealer say if the rounding of the cams caused metal shavings in the upper end. How many miles are on you car??????????

PS : at the end of the work order they rechecked the oil pressure

oil pressure = 42 psi reset

I do not know how doing two oil changes and replacing the supercharger would make the oil pressure increase from 30-42 psi. any one know what the normal pressure is suppose to be???
