Fuel Pump Issue

I've been having a problem with my car taking a while to start after being off for a couple of hours and the smell of gas coming from my car.

I went in for the 50K service today and had the dealership look at it and I was told I need a new fuel pump. They said it's leaking gas but I didn't have the time to have them fix it. Problem is, they also want about $634 to fix the problem.

This seemed a little pricey to me for a fuel pump and labor. I don't want to drive around a fire hazard but damn I feel I'm getting robbed here.

Does this price sound right you guys? Could I get the fuel pump elsewhere, take it to the dealership and pay for labor or perhaps just do it myself?

Finding a fuel pump to buy is the biggest issue right now though.

This just seemed really crazy to me so any help and suggestions are welcome

hey man i don't know which cobalt you have but i did an ebay search and found fuel pumps for under a 100 bucks. sorry if it isn't much help, but im sure if u take the part to a local auto service station it will be alot cheaper than what the dealership is asking.

I would get under there and take a look for myself.
It might be something that you can fix with a little work.

I'm out in west texas.
I looked online and found a few pumps but they aren't specific as to which model they go with. Does it matter or does Chevy use the same one for all the trims?

I have a 2006 Cobalt LT, which I think is now the LTZ right? It's confusing since I haven't kept up with how Chevy changed the trim models on the Cobalt.

Well I caved in and let the stealership install the pump. You know what? The parts were cheap but the labor KILLED me. I swear, about 45% of what I paid was for labor alone. Complete bullshit...
