Handbreak, garbage. Any ideas how to modify

As most of you know the hand break on the Cobalt works little at best. It truly is garbage, I am going to be racing in a rally cross series with my 2.0 Cobalt and I need a stronger handbreak. Has anybody attempted to modify their handbreak to make it stronger? If so can you tell me how I can go about this?
