Key stuck in ignition

Alrighty, this is a common problem with Cobalts as we know. And my ignition got replaced once under warrant before for the same problem. Which is when the car is in park the key cannot be removed and gets stuck in the "ACC" position.

I'm thinking of getting it replaced, yet again under warranty. However, while doing a search for this problem here, I came accross someone saying that you can manually remove the key by pressing some sort of button.

Can someone tell me where this button is located? Thanks.

look on the bottom cover for the steering column....there is a little square access panel, pop that out. Stick your finger in, and you'll feel a small putton, push that in and turn the key it will come out.

Also, I assume youre car is an automatic....it's probably the shifter assembly that needs to be replaced.

Yes my car is automatic. Here have been my issues reguarding transmission/ignition.

- Ignition replaced under warranty.
- Original "chrome" shifter button broke, replaced.
- Transmission threw CEL for my shift plus (never used since that day)

--------------
The assembly might be replaced because every time I shift from Park to whatever, it squeaks while I press the button to engage a gear.

Is the button square between the plastic covering and steering wheel?

EDIT 2: Nevermind, I found the button. My question is it safe to do this from now on?

well i had this problem at one time and it was the lil switch thats down in the shifter assembly. it works when you push the button on your shifter to put it in gear. one in gear the switch is released and wont allow you to turn the ingnition off until its back in park. i just pulled the switch out and taped it down so that is couldnt be released anymore and that solved my problem. if your still under warranty go tell them bout that and have em check it out. that will most likely be your problem. btw if you pull up that part of the console and look at the shifter assembly you will see a bar that comes outta the shifter going sideways from the way you move the shifter thats what presses on the switch to make it work.

wiggle the shifter in Park before you pull it out...does that help?

does it stick in the igntion between "off" and "run?"

if so, most likely the shifter assembly....we've replaced a million of them at work and I did one last week on an HHR

usually it's the BTSI that goes bad from pop spilling in the center console
