Leaky sunroof?

I have read time and again of leaks from the sunroof, and now that I just passed my bumper to bumper mileage, I have discovered a sunroof leak…

I’m hoping I can get some help with a bulletin, or what some common culprits are.

For about a week and a half we had A LOT more rain than normal, and not last weekend (not the one just past, but the one prior) I noticed my drivers floor under my seat was sopping wet…
my rear drivers floor mat was also sopping wet…

I was confused to say the least, because I’m pretty sure I don’t have incontinence…

Yesterday I was on the highway heading home, and I noticed that surrounding my onstar microphone, I have discoloring of my headliner – so if it’s coming in – that’s the spot.

I did a search and found some threads which seemed relivant, but (maybe I missed it) I didn't see any information to help me figure out how to fix it...

Can someone please help me out?

so no one here is hands on?

everyone just let some one else (often a tech at the dealer) deal with this??

I could really use some direction here...

it shouldn't do this period...

I have intentionally not cleaned the stain off my headliner (at the Onstar microphone) ~ but since I'm off my bumper to bumper, I'd wager that I have to do it myself or pay someone to do it...
And I'm a little on the broke side at the moment...

well, a lot of times with a sunroof the drains either get plugged up.....or the drain lines come off of the sunroof module. Simple test would be to open the sunroof and looks at the track. There should be smal holes in the corners of the track. Those your drain holes. You can try pouring a little water into the tracks and see if the water comes out of the drains. If they do not drain, they are plugged up and you need to blow them out. If it leaks inside the vehicle you will need to lower the headliner most likely and check the drains. Those are the most common problems I see at work, I am a tech at a dealer.

ok - thanks!

I figured that if there was a bulletin, maybe my dealer could look at it for n/c - or I could get some uber-clear instructions on going through it...

I hope I don't have to drop my headliner.

its not pain to fix. honestly, it was just taking out the 1 bolt that holds the A- pillar in, and the 3 bolts that hold the sun visor in.

removed the A-pillar (just lay it on your dash), and pull the headliner down a little and look underneath it. there is a tube that runs down (or up) your A-pillar and to your sunroof. follow that tube, and make sure it is connected to the sunroof barb.

mine was not. when i took it to the dealer the first time, they charged me 95 dollars to fix it. and all they did was stick the tube back on there. they didnt even secure it with anything. so of course it came off like 2 weeks later so i did it myself and saw how easy it was.

i just used a few drops of super glue to secure it back to the barb / fitting cause there is no reason for it to ever come off. its been good for 3 years now.

now remember, there are also drains on the back of the sunroof module.....you won't be able to rear those unless you lower down the headliner. I would check all 4 drains.

I did it.

This is the only thing I found - which in and of itself might be evidence of the front right hand drain connection being hte culprit;

there is pinkish stuff there which could easily be wax from the car wash I like to use ~ all the other three appear totally black, and in place...

That's a crappy Iphone(3) pic - so I'll try another picture or two...

It might not just be a bad connection there, it could be a fully or partially blocked line as well. If the drain is actually plugged, then the water fills up, and because it's just sitting in the tubing it eventually weeps through that connection. If it only does it when it really really pours, then obviously something is partially blocking the flow causing it to back up when it rains hard.

Just my .02.. I'm a service plumber so I've learned to track down leaks pretty well lol. That fitting doesn't look to me like it leaks all the time, only under certain conditions.. and these cars are prone to blocked drains.

*edit* a small gear clamp from a parts store would seal that rubber fitting right up

I also blew down the tube - so I'm sure it's not blocked...

But I am leaning towards it having not been a very good seal...

IMHO, a hose clamp can add a new problem - it can possibly wreck the plastic drain nipples...

I'm just cleaning the suspected bad leak one, then using some elmers glue to hopefully scure them, and add to the sealing ~ while not being too aggressive that I won't be able to pull it apart should the need arise in the future.
oh yeah, and I've gotta test it... But I'm pretty sure it is good now.

I'm going to keep an eye out for this- but for now I will consider this a case-closed.

Thanks very much everyone!

This stuff is what makes this sight great !

Did this same deal, same side today.
I used silicone to seal the tube to the sunroof drain and where the actual tube connects to the rubber adapter.
It rained today, and best I can tell it worked.
The carpet is still drying, though, and I want to test some more so for now the a pillar trim is still off.
Thanks for the pics - priceless !
