LNF gearbox noise

When I shift gears my car makes no noise. But the second I stop moving the stick, weather it's in gear or not, it makes an almost whining/grinding noise. I can hear things spinning and that's the loud part. Anyone have any idea on what this might be? The noise stops when I start to move the stick or if I position it somewhere in the gear perfectly it becomes faint, otherwise is very noticeable. Thank you,

Grinding isn't normal.. Whining, especially in the cold, is (I think). Mine does the same thing. Once it gets to temp and you drive around, does it stop?

I'd say your assessment is spot on. I have noticed that the transmission is noticeably more noisy as the temp drops below 40 degrees and a cold start. Takes about 10 miles of putting around for it to disappear for the most part but yeah, grinding is terribad.

The transmission in the cobalt is on par with other manuals I have driven over the years in normal operation but in no circumstance have I ever heard what could but construed as grinding unless the transmission is still cold and I attempt at 2-3 NLS.

Whine is one thing, grinding is another. Unfortuantely I have never worked on a transaxle with the Super Beetle's being the lone exception when I had to replace reverse. Systemically I am clueless beyond a broad idea of why what is where and couldn't speculate on the noise your hearing out of gear. I'll try to look into it but I don't think I'll have anything for you until next weekend. I'd suggest paying a reputable transmission shop take it out for a spin. Money well spent.

It's just loud. I can hear everything spinning in gear. It's extremely annoying.

hey mine was doing the same thing it sounded like a cluster gear bearing going bad. Transmission shops will tell you they have to tear it apart to see whats wrong. I replaced my trans with a used one for 1600$.. I didn't nls or abuse the trans very often just started happening still shifted smooth just kept getting louder and scary..
