multiple problems with brakes

2009 cobalt ss stock wheels and breaks

1. always squeal when I brake (I think rear brakes)
2. Sometimes when in reverse and breaking they let out a really really loud hornlike sound and no im not pushing my horn (Rear brakes)
3. Sometimes when Casual driving and i slightly turn my wheel to the left it sound like my front diver side brake is squealing, it continues to do it until i brake hard.
4. tonsss of brake dust

5. This may not be brakes but sometimes when im downshifting and braking, at around 15-0 mph my steering wheel turns aggressively to the left. I will even turn it back to the right and it will go right back to the left.

Please answer any or all of these please, or can anyone relate??

maybe a seized caliper? check your driver side calipers.

1. CHeck your rear brake pads and rotors, 08-10 SS's have a problem from the factory of the rotors scarring and brake pads wearing unevenly (inside v. outside)

2. My rear brakes do the same thing in reverse, usually in the morning and I believe its just the pads cleaning off the moisture off the rotors.

3. Sounds like a warped rotor.

4. Stock pads produce a lot of brake dust. Its normal. Replace pads if youd like with some from R1 concepts

5. Sounds like a warped rotor dragging.

6. The ebrake sucks in these cars. You can tighten it if your like by removing the center peices by the ebrake and remove the ebrake cover and use a 10mm (i think) wrench to tighten it. Make sure you do not tighten too much or else your rear brakes will drag.

Id replace rotors and pads from R1. I had many of the same issues and I replaced the rotors and pads and I havent had any dragging or squeeling since. Only the usual reverse horn like symptom early in the morning.

Hmm thats weird. I wonder if the inside pad on one of ur rear brakes is worn very unevenly and causing such noise. Id take the rear wheels off and take a look behind the rotor.

  1. Possible pad worn down. Lots of styles of brakes have a squeeler that contacts the disk to make a squeeling noise when the pad is worn down
  2. Mine do that too depending on tempature and humidity.
  3. Not really sure about this one.
  4. Wow, 4, 000 lbs of brake dust on a car that weighs arround 3, 000 lbs? I get alot of brake dust too, I just wash it off ever so often.
  5. Differential brakeing. Check your passanger front side brake to see if its even working.
