my paint is gone!!!

hey everyone, i have a 2009 ss/tc. it now has 2350 miles on it.

problem:

i hear a click/clunk noise when going over large bumps and also when i make a right turn into my driveway. my driveway slopes up when you turn into it. i opened my door when i when into my driveway and the click/clunk noise was not present. when i close the door it came back when i entered the driveway.

i got out to look at the door because it might be the door latch moving up and down and making the noise. it still might be the cause but i noticed that there is a 1/2 inch worn to the metal rub mark at the top left corner of my passenger door and i also found where it was rubbing against and it is the body of the car just above the weather strip.

WTF!!!!! i have had the car 2 months and i already had it to the shop for warrenty work several times. and now the door is rubbing away at the body of the car.

since its nighttime now i will check to make sure the door is actually rubbing against the body tomorrow by driving into my driveway on the same angle i always enter. and while it is sitting there i will check the door gap. i really hope its not from the body flex.

what do you guys think? anyone else have the door rubbing the body on the top of the door. i read the weatherstrip to the bottom of the door but this is different.

i had the click/clack noise you were talking about but it was the rear suspension. something to do with the mounts or something. had to be re-welded.

yea i read that thread before posting this one. i believe they said that the paint would rub against the rubber weatherstrip and that is what caused it. but my actual door is hitting the car body when i enter my driveway. on flat surfaces the door gap at that area is about 1/4 inch and then when i enter it is touching. that is KINDA a problem.

Ok take a picutre of this, sounds to be like your hinges are bent or misaligned, or your latch is malfunctioning. A 1/4 inch gap, that's pretty substantial...and where exactly is it banging on the body...below the weather stripping on the sill?

if ur looking at the passenger door on a coupe, look at the top left corner. about 2 inches from that corner above the weather strip. i took pics earlier this morning and ill try to post them tonight. there is a matching rub mark on the door right across from this rub mark on the body. once again top left of the pass door and body.

its like the body is flexing and twisting and the door is pivoting on the latch and pushing into the body when the body flexes.

Either that or your hinge is bent and/or rotating. Are the gaps everywhere else normal or does your driver side appear to have larger gaps on bottom/top/side than your passenger? If the gaps are fine there may be a chance the hinge is angled or installed too far into the car.

I'll keep an eye out for the pictures but I think I get what you're saying.

Update!!!

car is in the dealer for the second day. before i went to the dealer i found out what was causing this noise and rubbing. the passenger door striker was loose. the two torx 30 bolts have no locktite on them from factory and they backed out causing the door to move up and down when you hit bumps and when the body flexes the door will hit the body.

the dealer is using touch up paint and wet sanding the area. i also brought it in for the CEL on. codes P0300, P0301, P0303, P0304, B2813. they are giving me all (4) new coils and plugs. 2500 miles.

i also called chevy customer service just so i could document all the problems the car came with and the problems that have occured since i bought it. they seemed nice but im weary of them because they can always stab you in the back if something major happens.

but the squeaky wheel gets the grease! or in cobalt case the squeaky brakes!

I've got 3 of 4 doors hitting just above the weatherstripping. I'm taking it to the dealer for service next week. I just drove it off the lot a week ago.

tell them u dont like the touch up job if u can tell ... touch up will let salty water get under it and rust ou the car... if u can argue witht hem to have it fixed properly( i work at a body shop so i know what i am talking about... they will have to fix it because its there fault from the factory.)

This is a problem with every cobalt. Take it to the dealer and they will fix it under warranty and put chipguard strip over to prevent it from happening again.

also check where the fender and bumper meet. You will find that the paint is chipping away in the gap
