Problen with coolant
Problen with coolant
I got the low coolant light on my 06 SS/SC, so I bought the Dex-Cool GM uses (stupid IMO). I went to go fill the reservoir and I noticed that it's not the orange color it should be. The S/C reservoir is though. Does that mean someone refilled this car with regular antifreeze, not the Dex-cool? I read in the owner's manual that this may cause engine corrosion and may void the warranty. BTW, I bought this car used with remainder of factory warranty so I want to make sure I still am covered. The dealership doesn't know yet as I have had it in the shop for warranty work and it has been covered so far. Has this happened to anyone else? And will it tear up my engine?
So, anyways, if it is the wrong color, should I flush out the radiator and the system and refill with Dex-cool so that it looks right to the dealership, just to prevent any warranty issues later?

most of the coolant that they make these days is compatible with both systems. When I went to get regular coolant last month at walmart for my truck they did not have one that wouldnt also work with dex, so Im sure you are fine.
Do NOT, I repeat whatever you do, put anything but DexCool in your car! It is impossible to completely flush the coolent system. If you combine both types of antifreeze it is extremely corrosive. If your car has something other than DexCool flush the entire system and refill with DexCool. These instructions are from my mechanic, who knows just about everything there is to know about a GM car.

but id flush it personally!
OK so I had a coolant flush today. I would have done it myself but I live in an apartment complex and don't really have a place to do it. Anyways, after the guy did it I looked under the hood and again it was yellowish green, not red. So I asked the guy and he said he doesn't use Dex-cool because it eats through water pumps, hoses, etc. He said he used a universal coolant and that it won't void my warranty. Is that true? Is there a universal coolant that won't void it even though it's not Dex-Cool? Thanks!
I use Prestone Universal....Dex-Crap is the worst
as far as voiding your warranty....it all depends on who works on it...I wouldn't void it just for the simple fact that it's meant for your car just like the Dex-Crap

Yes there is what they call "Global extended life antifreeze".....its compatible with everything including the infamous dexcool......and as far as dexcool goes, its great UNTILL you get a leak.....then its the worst **** on the face of the earth because dexcool+air+aluminum=bad news......the phosphates in the dexcool mix with oxygen and together they eat the aluminum intake or whatever it comes in contact with......its not a good situation, ive seen it in my old 4.3 vortec......Just some tidbits for you people to ponder over.......Later
