Question Is this a serious issue?

Ok, so last week some time I was driving over to my g/f's house. And I was at a traffic light. When the light turned green and I got into second gear around 3500 to 4000 rpms, it started missing really bad. Similar to what it is like when you hit the rev limiter only it was much more violent. So I immediatly got off of the gas and shifted(by the way I was passing a car which is why my rpms were that high). And for the rest of that trip I noticed that every time I went to shift the car felt like it was going to die on me. It felt like a loss of power for about a second and then it would come back. So anyway I took it to the dealership and my mechanic looked at it and took it out and it acted normal but my boost semed to be a little high. So he hooked it up to some computer thing to diagnose the problem and my MAF sensor was bad. So they replaced that and everything returned to normal.

Today driving home from work that same problem came back but with a vengence. I got up to about 3k rpm and the miss was extremely violent. I was having backfires from the exhaust that sounded like I was on the car shifting at 7k rpm but I wasn't. And it does it in every single gear. Not just second this time. I don't have the loss of power when shifting now but I do have the really bad misses at about 3k to 3500 rpm.

What could the problem be? Bad spark plugs, water getting into the intake, water in the gas tank or #4 about to go out? I have absolutely no ideas. And when I take the car tomorrow to the dealership and they cannot diagnose the problem nor fix it I am gonna get rid of the balt. I had read a review somewhere that cobalts are only good til about 50k miles then they start to crap out. And mine seems to be living up to that. I have 50,300.

Sorry for such a long thread but please I do want some input on what you guys think the problem might be. Cause I just do not know.

It could be a bad crankshaft position sensor, or ignition module. Keep in mind that pretty much everything on these cars are all computerized. Also could be one of the 4 black ignition boxes that goes over top of the spark plug!!

Yea, but it was strange that when they changed the MAF Sensor that is went away. For about a day or two. I can have those things checked out though when I take it in tomorrow. Thans for the help.

make sure they check both 02 sensors...also, take a look at your CAI...see if your filter is wet. it has been raining here the past couple days. Also, have them check the crankshaft position sensor... all these went out on me at different times and made the car act all retarded like you describe.

BTW, i had 74,000 hard miles on my last balt before i totaled it...they will take some abuse and last for a good while... dont hang it up just yet

Could be the connector for the maf itself ,not the maf and when he replaced it ,it had a good connection.
Ask the to check the connector ,maybe moisture is getting in.

That is what I am going to be checking today. Cause it seems like once the car warms up it runs fine. So my guess is it is just water getting on the sensor of the intake plus the filter being wet. With the AEM Intake, the sensor is in a different location that on the injen, fujita and K&N.

If it runs fine when the car is warmed up check your plugs.

That happened in my 96 grand am and all it was was the plugs.... still doesn't make sense that it ran fine after that sensor was changed unless they did check the plugs and cleaned them off some while they were out..

If you have an aftermarket intake, pull it off and check the filter, sensor and piping. I pulled mine off and as soon as I got the filter off, some water started dripping out of the pipe. So I pulled the pipe off and cleaned and dried it out.

Also the filter was a little damp so I set it out to dry. And one other thing, I got the new MAF Sensor a few days ago, and I noticed on it that there was water spots. So water getting into the intake was causing the problem. But I am going to order a better intake because the AEM isn't very good at all. The whine isn't quite loud enough and plus this huge problem I had with the water. Prolly gonna get the K&N Typhoon. Also gonna get the hydro shield. Screw this water issue. I don't need it again.

The guy who does the work on my car has an Injen and he also wrapped the intake piping in some heat shield stuff to reduce the heat getting to the pipe and his whines like a mother. He also did an install of a Fujita but he said it sounded really quiet. But the only reason I a going against a fujita is because the newer model fujitas have that raised logo thing on the top of the pipe and I saw in one SS/SC where it had a hole worn completely through the intake pipe. But I do think the Injen is the loudest. Judging by my friends. But I haven't heard the all either. I bet the RAW 3" is loud.

I have that happen from time to time but nothing with any consistency... I figured it was a misfire of the spark plugs... But I still have the stock plugs in mine, so I dunno what to say then!

My cat isn't clogged however there is a piece in it that is broken. I am getting it replaced within a week or two. Also covered under warranty. GM put out a notice for the cats cause they are POS's. As soon as I got the Magnaflow catback on and pushed it one time I started to get a rattle. Tapped on the cat and sure enough. Something in there is broke.
